Heres a picture of one side still trying to get one of the other. When I do, on the obverse the second 1 in the date clearly is stamped over a 0. And how much does the big hole effect value? I now it wont be worth anything but just wondering.

Ojo,this is actually a British traders' token. It is not a Canadian one. This is one of the non-local general circulation pieces, which were issued anonymously.I like the pieces that say 'PURE COPPER PREFERABLE TO PAPER',&
'TRADE & NAVIGATION',as there is one that depicts a portrait of King George IV on the reverse & dated 1838.This
is actually a 1 Stiver token from British Guiana.I have also got a piece that looks like the one inscribed 'ONE PENNY',but it is inscribed,'ONE STIVER' instead.

O.K. Thanks for the info! I would have always thought it was Canadian! lol Mine depicts a women ( britannia I assume) holding a plant& a staff with somethng wrapping around and wings on the top. ( The symbol for health?) She is sitting on luggage and there is a ship in the distance, you can also see some detail in the grass. Above that is "Trade Navigation". Below is the date 1814. The second 1 is clearly stamped over what looks like a 0. I'll try to get a pic. of this side up!

Ojo,I have checked my collection,& yes,I have got one of these pieces, but my one has the date 1813,& the obverse inscription is 'TRADE & NAVIGATION'.The seated figure is not Britannia. It is representing commerce,as she is seated
upon what looks like a bale of wool. She has an olive branch in her right hand, which represents peace. The staff that you are referring to is called a cadeceus, which is an
ancient symbol representing health.

The 1814 Trade and Navigation/One Penny Token- Pure Copper Preferable to Paper is a Canadian Piece, at least, they were imported and used in Nova Scotia for many years. They were imitations of the 1812-1813 tokens made by Thomas Halliday, and antedated to avoid laws on importing light weight tokens. They were actually brought in until about 1838. They have poorer workmanship and are lighter in weight than the 1812-1813 issues. The 1814/0 has 2 varieties- both have engrailed edges, one is a coinage striking, similar to US coins (top up on one side, down on the other side), and the other is medal striking, where both sides of the token have the top up. The other variety is plain (not over 0). Prices in my book are VG-$30, F $60, VF-$75. for both of the 1/0 varieties.
The 1838 issues are for British Guiana- Demerara and Esiquibo, I believe, and show the actual date that the pieces were made. I believe they were probably masde by the same mint. The 1814 is definately considered a Canadian issue- Charlton catalogue NS-20B1 for medal, and NS-20B2 for coinage.

Some of my favourite pieces outside British Africa has to be the pre-Confederation Canadian colonial coinages

Aidan, I have to agree. I love pre-Confederation Newfoundland coins. Yes I admit that being from Newfoundland makes me utterly and completely biased but that still doesn't change the fact that this set is a nice set to start on...

BTW, looking for a decently priced Newfoundland $2 gold coin... if anyone knows of one (condition is not important... set is not for me) I would greatly appreciate it!
