I do not recall seeing star notes with the star in front of the Serial Number like this one. How common are they?

This is normal. 1957 star notes are rather common, especially in circulated condition.

Small size silver certificates, gold certificates and red seal United States Notes all have the star at the front of the serial numbers on replacement notes.

There is no letter at the first of this SN...is the star to take the place of the letter? Any way to know what the letter should be? Or do some of these not have a letter to begin? All the other ones of these I have begin with a letter.

The star designates that the note is a replacement note.

Star notes are used to substitute for regular notes that have been spoiled during the printing process.

It is normal.
