I think that a few of them still exist somewhere. Mint employees have taken things like these before (the 1933 Double Eagles) and I think a few of them were swapped out for older dollars before they were set to be melted. Due to the government threatening to take any that do surface, I doubt we will see one soon.

No evidence has surfaced which proves that even a single piece exists. I completely understand and appreciate the idea of mint employees taking some prior to their destruction. However, it's hard for me to believe that anyone would keep this a secret for this long. Something would have surfaced by now, but who knows? Maybe one will show up some day. I hope.

If you got away with robbing a bank, how many people would you tell?

A good point, but people can't help but brag in inner circles. This is where that "something" would have come from- not from the source, but from the person who was bragged to. That's my line of thinking anyway.

Then again, possible prison time is a good motivator to stay quiet.

I believe the people have done that. We just haven't heard about them.

Plenty of precedent in the art industry for commissioned thefts which are never seen again.

The Langford Double Eagles were off the radar for years. The mistake they made was involving the mint. I would have gotten them out of the United States if I were them. Very bad decision on their part. As they say, possession is 9/10ths of the law. If anyone has a 1964-D silver dollar, I'm sure they followed that case very closely.

I looked to Wikipedia for an answer.
Something over 300,000 1964 Peace dollars were officially struck, but ALL of them were melted amid heavy security.
There have been a few UN official '64D Peace dollars struck, that look to be as good as if not better, than the originals. However, I wonder if they should all be considered counterfeit, and therefore illegal. That means it should not be legally possible to own them, either.

Has anybody counterfeited '33 double eagles? It could be quite risky owning THOSE!

Google Images will show you lots of '64D's, both proof and uncirculated.

Those are most likely computer-generated and/or fantasy pieces.

I haven't seen one, but I have been told by two different dollar specialists that they HAVE seen them. (No, no names.) Whether they were pulling my leg, or telling the truth I can't say.
