I've been trying to determine what degree of cleaning/hairlines cause a coin to be designated 'details'. However, there seems to be inconsistency when it comes to TPGs. It seems to involve which company is doing the grading (Does NGC give more leeway than PCGS?) and the scarcity/rarity or the coin itself.

Would you say these ideas are correct?

Here is an example from Heritage auctions. If this were a raw coin, I would surely say this is a details coin. However, there is no such designation.

Thoughts on this?

It just looks like a coin from a fairly fresh die that is really baggy. I've seen Morgans like this right out of a mint sewn bag.

I see nothing on this coin which might warrrant a Details designation.

OK- I am probably mistaken. However, looking at the larger shots from the Heritage site, I can see a lot of (what appear to be) hairlines in the fields of the obverse. These are also apparent just under the child's bust. The abrasion actually shades the fields a whiter color there are so many of them. Also, take a look around the obverse rim under the date. Seems like more than contact marks. Compare the fields with the spaces between the small stars, the lettering, and the date. These portions are relatively smooth and scratch free. Wouldn't they exhibit the same marks if the marks were bag/contact marks?

Not arguing here, just trying to figure this out. Thanks
