I found an old Wheat cent in my pocket change the other day, and was thrilled. Now I'm thinking of buying a few of these and using one to pay for stuff at gas stations or wherever. Just to pass along the fun of finding weird pocket change to the next person who takes time to look at their change. http://www.ebay.com/itm/201220648845

When I was a paperboy (many years ago), I used to always get old coins from one old gentleman when I went to collect for the paper. (Indian cents, Merc dimes and Buffalo nickels mainly). Now, some times I put dateless Buffalo nickels into circulation! I figure somebody will get a kick out of them!

I spend some old paper money, because Canadian paper money have changed a lot from the old designs. It's funny to see people confused at me spending a "rare" note or not accepting it because they think it's no longer cashable (or I like to call it "expired money"). I have put one or two nickel dollars into circulation a couple of times. If the person you're handing the cash over to is an older person it's not very fun, I wait when there is a young immigrant. Sometimes I hope I sparked their interest by showing them that these "old" money are still widely available, proven by me being very willing to spend them at face value.

I tried spending a nickel dollar once and the young girl said they only except real money. Same with a bunch of beat up 70 something half dollars someone gave me once.
I will often bring old 1 dollar bills when yard saleing because if something is 10 dollar I whip out the ratty one dollar bill and say "All I have is a dollar." they will take it in a heart beat. Now you know my bargain hunting secret.

Guess what, I dropped my pocket piece (nickel dollar) once and a 3 year old kid picked it up and gave it back to me, and he said "money". Even a little kid recognises it as (real) money!

I do that all the time. Putting old coins back in circulation. Usually a 1944 Lincoln Cent. Always fun to think of someone finding one and raving about finding an old coin in change.

Close I get to this is spending Ike's and half dollars. The teenagers usually call a manager to see if they can accept them, at what point we both laugh at them.

Funny, I was just about to write a post about this exact topic!
I would enjoy spending a few bucks on some common, beatup IHS, Buffalos and Mercs and buying candy bars with them.

On a few occasions I have offered a 90% silver coin or fiat money, no one will take the silver. It amazes me, the level of propaganda surrounding precious metals, and the lies associated with its real value.

I used to do it with Canadian 1-cent coins all the time... at coin shows, I give out old bills, nickel dollars and impaired proof strikes as change to young numismatists.
