I am not sure if this has already been asked but here goes. Can any explain why in 2003 the 3 is the same size as the other digits but in 2013, the 3 is much larger?

I just did a quick Google search and:
Dates-On-5-Cents
Dates-On-5-Cents
Is there two versions or was the photo just edited?

the second image you have posted looks obviously flattened (the whole image)I have never seen any 2013 nickels that look like that.

I think it's just the RCM doing what they want. I think the 3 on 2013 nickels are ridiculously large.

Interesting observation timnic44. It appears in 2009 the numbers in the date were changed to a "ranging" font rather than a "lining" font. Ranging numbers go above/below the normal height of uppercase letters. They are supposed to be easier to read in long strings of numbers. Sometimes you see them used for e.g., phone numbers on business cards.

Yes, the image is very obviously flattened, but the 3 has been moved up.

4 numbers are considered to be a "long string"?

I believe that the 2013 bottom picture has been flattened, notice the 2013 you are reading right now is flat, the RCM is obviously making it the way that they want and what looks more fancy or artsy... interesting though, keep an eye out for any error such as this.

Another interesting forum topic would be the 2014 obverse with the queens hair as having more detail.

Yeah! I think it's a great improvement over the engraving of previous years!

The type-face on the date of circulation coins has changed form time to time (not just 5ยข), despite the designs of reverses remaining constant for over 75 years. The bottom pic shows an entirely different type-face on the date compared to the type-face on the date of the circulation coins we've all seen in 2013 (as demonstrated in the top pic), so I think the bottom pic was an amateur photoshop job. Not sure why the RCM played with the date type-faces, or other finite design elements that occurred over the years.

Wow now I've got to go and look at the examples of pocket change I've stashed. I haven't really looked close at the current coinage.
