I found a $72 bag of Ike dollars at my bank in addition to the $9 in Ike's I found last week. I'm thinking about starting a collection of date and mint marks. I also want to look for major varieties and some minor ones. Can you guys help me figure out what varieties I should look for?

The Ike Group is a good place to get information about varieties. I also moved your thread to the variety section

I would go through all those '72 P's first and check for type 2's...there are three types for this year P mint and 2 being the scarcest and of most value...the earth on reverse and crater above the double L in dollar are your easiest ways to distinguish...you can easily find this online for more guidance

with fuzzy. Check out the Ike Group. There are over 10 attributions (peg leg, fev, etc) for the 71D's alone.
