The carwash I go to only gives out quarters, and I must admit sometimes I cherry pick some ATBs.

Like Fuzzy, I get dollar coins from my bank. I usually take whatever they have, keep the near-BU ones and spend the rest.

The payment machine at Highland Parking Structure in Hollywood gave me some dollar coins in my change when I was there in August.

Funny thing happened to me in Long Beach - I asked a shop keeper to change a dollar coin (for the parking meter) and he didn't seem to recognise it as US money.....I had to explain to him "this is a US dollar coin'

No, but the coke machine in my office gives the "gold" dollar coins as change. I usually put in a bill for a drink and then hit the change return and cycle through a few to see if there are any I want to keep. Then I buy a drink. If I put in a 5-er and hit change return I get 5 dollar coins.

My bank usually has horribly beat up ones and the coke machine has BU ones much of the time.

If I want to cash in ones, fives, or tens for dollar coins, and banks are closed, I go to one chain of car wash that uses dollar coins for their self-service machines, and their change machines are stocked with the coins. They even have stickers on the bill readers, written in English and Spanish, that explain that the coins dispensed are valid currency for anyone who doubts their legal tender status beyond the car wash.
