I do not use folders. I have my own binders and containers for specific coins such at the Kookaburra and the kangaroo. all the rest are sorted in additional folders and in safes. Those could be considered a "hoard" but I choose based on interest - not for value or metal content. That is what makes this hobby special what ever way you do it is the right way for you.

I have a passion for many areas of numismatics, including medals. To me the thrill is in the hunt, the history and the sheer beauty in many cases. I also enjoy good ole plain silver and gold. I am presently working on an MS69 Heraldic Art Medal set, I have 17 to go, some are very difficult to locate. I also have a weakness for French medals, the artwork is quite amazing.

I collect classic coins but I am (currently) hoarding many modern coins. I hope to sort through them when I have time. I'm trying to find errors and maybe create a few State Quarter collections.

Not sure what I am really. I like to buy the junk silver, in particular the junk foreign silver, but I try my best to cherry pick out the best. I really like the US junk silver too. Hate FDR as a President, worst President ever, so I don't like the Rosie Dimes, but I do have a nice set that I picked mainly out of a junk silver coffee can. Really love the old designs in my junk silver purchases. Still buy some way above melt though too. Recently bought 3+ rolls of Barber dimes at $3 each. Rosie and Mercs were going for roughly $1.50 each at the time. Full rim Barbers, not a single one out of the maybe $150 face value had a full liberty, but plenty of partial liberty's (150+ by my sifting. . . . .). I do the same with gold. Tough to call it junk gold, but I can generally take my pick of 10 - 20 coins at one price or my pick of 2 - 6 more at a higher price. I do purchase with melt value in mind, but often end up picking the prettier coin for a few percent more. Call me a hoarder that likes to collect. I do have sets, but none in folders, all in 2x2's. Can't call myself a stacker though when the last visit to the LCS was a Braided Hair Large Cent F-VF, a Flying Eagle cent in VG, and a really sharp Three Cent Nickel XF+ for $50 out the door. Melt value was probably all of 7 cents if I am lucky. Not sure how I did on my buys, not sure I care. I trust the dealer and these were my best picks out of what he was going to bring down to the FUN show. Type coins are fun.

Quote: Collectors have to have a reason for every single coin being in their collection, and don't keep coins they cannot find a reason to keep. I have to disagree with that. I am a collector, but I also hoard. I do NOT have a specific reason for each individual coin I own. I have rolls upon rolls of pre 1960 nickels. Same for wheaties. I have 6 albums for ATBs. I have a completed Ike album and plenty more of them in tubes, OGP and 2x2s. But I do not keep every coin I come across either. I did not answer the poll because there is not an "a combination of both and that is how it shall remain" option.

I am much like Sap here... I collect, not hoard.
I am a PCGS Registry Set player, so I am always hunting to either fill in the holes of the sets I am focusing on, or constantly hunting for upgrades to existing sets. Sometimes, it is the thrill of the hunt, that keeps me going...

My vote will be off, because I don't "buy" coins, I just get them at face value but didn't have an option for that so...I went with the closest if you considered $1 for a 1973D Ike/Morgan/peace, $0.05 for a War Nickel, $0.10 for a merc, etc buying.

Both. I work on sets and hoard silver. I'll scour auction sites to fill a hole in the collection, and get much of my silver in the form of coins taken from circulation.

I didn't answer the poll. I collect coins that are apart of a numismatic/economic story. Each coin represents a key segment in that story( numismatic or economic).

I am a collector and love working on my albums, but I hoard every Bicentennial Quarter that comes my way. I've just always loved that design.

Quote: I hoard every Bicentennial Quarter Did you happen to grow up on Rankin/Bass TV specials? Every time I see one I start to sing in my head, "Will you play for me pa-rum-pa-pa-pum, on your drum." It has more of a Christmas vibe to me than a nationalism one. I don't recall ever spending one of these myself, but I wouldn't call 3 rolls hoarding.

Matter of fact it's getting to be that time of year to dust off my DVD's of them and have my annual Rudolph watch. But, the drummer on the quarter always puts me more in mind of those Schoolhouse Rock episodes that came out about that same time about the American Revolution. "Get your powder, get your gun, report to General Washington..."

I'm a collector, my target is wide but every coin I put into binder have a different KM#. The coins I collect don't have significant value above face value so no need to make a hoard.
