Poll Question
Hope I didn't leave too many variations out.
I am new, and still finding direction, but I am aspiring to be like #4 and #6.
If I had to choose, it would be #6.
Curious about where others stand.

Scottk, I think your poll is very valuable to this coin forum. However, I prefer not to answer it because I, along with many of the members of this collecting forum, am a collector, not a hoarder or silver stacker. You collect the coins you like. There is a certain beauty to an individual coin that makes it unique. Thus, to hoard coins is to completely defeat the purpose of collecting. I know all my coins individually; if I were to write down a list of all my coins, I am sure I can write down some of the specific coins I have, or at least the most valuable ones, including their mint marks and conditions. Whether a coin collector should hoard is outside the question. Sure, I am a picker, often changing what I am interested in (and my relative lack of direction is one of my weaknesses), but I still admire coins as individuals, not as numbers (of coins in a hoard). I deal with enough numbers when I do electrical engineering or physics.I do not mean to come out harsh at all and do not want to offend anybody. This is simply my Half Cent.

You forgot the whole investment/money making aspect. For some that is the key goal while for others (like myself) the interesting/historical aspects are of more value. But I gave my vote - not telling which one though.

Of course the money aspect is present. I pick because I know given the effort, I can get good deals (transactions whereby both parties are equally satisfied). Surprisingly however, I have never before sold a single coin from my collection.
If you like to pick, I have to give a shoutout to Coinpicker, a member of this forum from whom I learned a lot about picking.
Another person, Silverpicker has videos on Youtube that show this process.

As I've often said on the forum when asked "I have no clear cut collecting goals, I simply buy whatever I'm attracted to." This is exactly what I do. I have selected a few series' from the few countries I collect (Draped, Capped & Seated from the US, Vicky and Edwards from Canada, Late Hammered and Early Milled Silver from the UK, older thalers, medieval gold and ancient gold & silver etc.) and I will just browse and buy what I like. No clear cut path for me. Just the way I like it Quote: There is a certain beauty to an individual coin that makes it unique. Thus, to hoard coins is to completely defeat the purpose of collecting. While, I do not invest as such, I do like to think of my coins as an investment and will occasionally sell coins here and there once I tire of them. I also someones buy coins that I don't necessarily like because they are at a good price so I can flip them later.

Picking is the only way I've ever done it - my concentrations on a given issue last about a year - so only one poll answer comes close to my situation.

I do a little of both...There are a few coins which I collect. Kennedy halves (P&D), Franklin halves, Sac$ (year set), SBA$ (unc, complete), and Ikes (P,D,S unc, complete). I am also working on a 20th Century type set, and am always on the lookout for upgrades. I wouldn't call myself a hoarder, but I do have a small silver stack, mostly .999 with a few 80% Canadian silver dollars. I try not to hold on to 90% or 40% junk silver for very long, I try to turn it into either .999 or something else of collector value to me when I have enough to do so. I collect silver because it's pretty and because I like to, and to have something nice to pass on to my kids someday. I'm not "prepping", so junk silver Roosevelt dimes and Washington quarters mean little to me. But then again I also have over $100 in clad Ikes in tubes in my junk drawer. Toothfairy/birthday/allowance money for my daughter and future kids.

I don't really fit into any of the poll topics. I collect all World coins, ancient to modern, in all cultures. Would it be possible for some bright and opportunistic individual to work out a format to design and sell folders for ancient coins? Am I a hoarder? YES, but each coin in my collection in individually described on the cardboard 2x2 which holds it. I will collect anything! Does that make me a collector or hoarder?

I am a collector, not a hoarder. Hoarders, by definition, keep everything that comes their way. Collectors have to have a reason for every single coin being in their collection, and don't keep coins they cannot find a reason to keep. For me, if I obtain two coins that are identical in terms of date mintmark variety etc, then I keep the better one and get rid of the lower grade one.
In terms of answering the poll, I went with what turns out to be the current majority opinion: "I have no clear cut collecting goals, I simply buy whatever I'm attracted to.". However, this is not entirely true for me. I do have goals, just not the "gotta fill the holes" type of goals that the other collector-oriented options lean towards. They're very vague goals: "One coin from every country that ever made coins in the past 2500 years"; "One coin from each Roman emperor"; "One coin from every late Roman mint-city"; and so forth. And I'm not entirely dedicated to collecting only those coins that meet those goals; if I see a nice coin that I don't already have and doesn't fit any of my goals, I'll buy it anyway.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I tend to only buy dates and mint marks I need in coins. I do however experience mission creep a lot with my albums. Though I pull a lot of those out of circulation. Technically I collect mercs,Roosevelt times, jeffersons 1938-1972, Buffalo nickels, a 7070, lincoln cents wheat to modern, transportation tokens, Ike's, and Susan's. Oh and State Quarters, ATB, and Presidential dollars. Most of it was I just found super cheap albums for like $5 and thought it would be cool. I'm telling my self no more albums haha. Only my State Quarters are complete and I had that album for 10 years before I finished it. The closest I get to hoarding is Indiana related transit tokens and War Nickels. I put the few hundred Indy transit tokens in a frame on my desk and I have a spare page in my Dansco to hold the War Nickels I find in circulation.

Correction I hoard wheat cents. I just keep them in a box in rolls. Everyone I find in circulation I keep there. I just don't feel like selling them for 2.5 cents apiece haha. If I could get 5 I would but I figure I could get one of my nephews or nieces interested on day by giving them a folder and the coins and go at it.

Quote: As I've often said on the forum when asked "I have no clear cut collecting goals, I simply buy whatever I'm attracted to." This for me basically. I do try to keep and hoard all (or at least all not obviously damaged) examples of some particular dates that I get in change. These are always dates that don't appear very often, so the largest resulting "hoard" (the 2010-SP 10 rubles) is currently somewhere around twenty. That said, the only times I ever sold coins from my collection were either 1) to make a quick profit five minutes after I bought it (yes that was a real story), or 2) to give them to a starting young collector for a symbolic sum (yes that was also a real story); and neither of these included particularly many coins either. So the ratio of coins bought vs. sold could presumably make me a hoarder. It helps, of course, that almost all of my coins are common enough that they aren't really worth the effort to sell, and most of the few that are valuable enough to sell were bought during the 2011 price spike and would result in a large net loss if ever sold... I'd rather still have the coin thank you very much!

Hi, my name is Connie and I am a coin addict ! My addiction started 3 yrs ago when I started taking extra change to work with me, just in case a wheat back, silver dime or quarter came my way. Moved away, taking my precious finds we me. Started looking them up as I decided to stay at home with my children. Fell in love with the coin. I have all equipment to be able to see each coin in its beauty and love to make fun of Lincoln's hair sometimes. Now my friends bring me their change instead of the bank. Now I sorted thousands of coins, keeping them in sorted trays from 1907 Indian head to 2014 Shields. I love pennies, but do keep the rest too.
