I have this small vinyl album to put coins in that I am selling. It holds 2x2 flips. I'm thinking about converting it into a ike and Susan b Anthony album to hold my collection. Would this be safe to use long term? It's made by whitman but it mentions vinyl which scares me. Any one have one? https://www.whitman.com/store/Inven...cketW-Header*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Well, I think the theory here is to get safety flips and the 2x2s should protect the coins; the vinyl won't contact the coins. Nonetheless, I don't think I would get it. I have three-ring binders for a lot of my collection with safe sheets that hold safety flips.
Then again, it is whitman! You'd think they'd make safe stuff... But I'm with you.

Depends how paranoid you are. Whitman says it is safe if you use Cardboard coin flips as the coins won't touch the vinyl. Many other albums, including Dansco 7000, use vinyl in their coin pages. It shouldn't be a problem, but some say vinyl is always a no-no.

Ok I guess I will go with it. Most of the coins are just AU ones I got from banks at face value. A few low value proofs. It's almost a push even putting them in flips but I want to write on them for varieties etc and display them. I have the album but I need a new use for it.

My experience is that the coins in mylar / cardboard 2x2's clear PVC pages have lost at least some of their redness for bronze coins and whiteness for silver coins.
The mylar seems to be somewhat pervious and so letting some of the slow gassing of the PVC to get to the coin inside the 2x2 flips. That is why I re housed all of my collection into either Mylar or polypropylene album pages.

Search for albums that specify "archival" or "PVC-free". Since people want those, any manufacturer that doesn't specify IMO is hiding something.

I've got one of those but only because someone gave it to me. I started to put those 1 oz Copper rounds in them and was planning on giving it to my grand kids. Then I said to my self, this thing looks dumb. To small to be an Album. To weird to be a Folder and not the right size. Can't close in the individual slots unless tape. Possibly only good for 2x2's but then just get those 20 slot pages instead. To sum it up, I'll probably ending up throwing it out.

From what I have read, these vinyls are produced with less plasticizers than regular PVC. This is safer than the older vinyl and may be safe for short-term storage but is not safe for your purpose of long-term storage.

I will try it out for awhile and see. Just plan on keeping them in a bookcase in my bedroom. Only putting business strikes of Ike dollars and SBA that I pulled out of circulation so if something happens it's no big deal.

In that case the, as jbuck says, just try to keep the room temperate (not too hot) and the humidity low, if you can help it.

I ended up getting rid of the album. My dealer insisted on it being part of a trade, so I went along with it. Pretty much helped me get an additional $15 in negotiations. Need something new to put my Ike's in now.

If they're from circulation, safety flips in pvc-free pages in a 3-ring binder ought to do nicely.

Yeah just need the pages. I got safety flips for them last week but I got sick with a bad cold right after I bought them so I left them on my desk.
