I'll start by saying that I'm not a coin collector, but inherited jars full of 1940 - 1964 quarters, 1940's half dollars, 1960's half dollars, and 1950's half dollars.

I came across this 1954 Franklin half dollar specimen with a "2" stamped into it to the left of the face.

First, I'm wondering if this is a genuine "error coin". And second, if it is, what value would it have?

Thanks in advance!

ps. sorry for the slightly out of focus picture. I do mostly portrait photography and don't have a macro lens.

it looks as if it was counter stamped after it left the mint so if this is the case it wouldn't be an error of any kind just post mint damage
Rest in Peace

Could have been added to designate a birth month to go along with the year. Definitely post mint damage. Mike

For sure someone punched that there. Most people that do that try to represent something. I wonder what that was supposed to mean?

Because the 2 is indented and a different font than the other numbers we know it happened post mint.
