I obtained this 1953 Canadian quarter and believe the design on the reverse is much smaller than it should be. I would like to know if this is common, and if this coin is worth setting aside even though it is in pretty rough shape.
The reverse design isn't smaller than it should be, it's that circular scratch tricking your eyes. The circular scratch is due to coin Rolling Machine Damage. Keep it for its silver content.
Yes a Rolling Machine Damage or a vending machine damage. the coin looks normal size, this happens to a lot of coins, and there are also marks called meter marks on a lot of older nickels from parking meters!
