Hey everyone,

The half-aholic Fox got $500 in halves from his local credit union today, searched the all of the rolls, and only found a measly two 40% silver halves. A 1967, and a 1968. I gave my 7 Eleven clerk friend one for a belated 50th birthday gift (his birthday is November 10th and how about that? A sliver 50 cents for a 50th birthday) Anyway, that was only two silvers out of 1,000 coins, and not even a 90% silver Kennedy or Franklin? That's a total bummer.

As for the clad halves, I spent a few on food earlier this evening, going into the early morning, and I plan on spending them all, as needed.

That's about all I have to report.

I'd be happy with that. On a different CRH forum I've seen people get 50+ box skunk streaks. Always good to find silver! Even if it's just a little.

Pity about only finding two 40%'ers!

Spend the base metal clads on gasolene. That saves taking them back to a bank, and taking up your time and inconvenience.
Stash up to 100 of them at a time somewhere in your car, to be spent as required. Can't do that with coins of lower face values.
That is what I do with 50 cents, one dollar and two dollar coins.
The $2 coins pay for gasolene for my gas guzzling old classic car; that way, I can kid myself that I can run it for free!

Lower face value coins just get thrown into a big cookie jar until I have about $500 accumulated, to be then taken back to the bank when it is full. It takes me about 2 years to accumulate $500 in lower denonination coins of 5c, 10c and 20c coins.
The bank just takes the mixture of denominations and throws the lot into a coin sorter, which automatically counts them by weight, and bags them. It rejects dud and foreign coins, They pay me back in notes.

The only thing the teller does is load them all into a chute in the machine, then presses a button.

They are happy to take them, because I don't bother the bank as a CRH'er. The bank would not be interested if was.

The Raymo thinks that's not too bad a return. Better than most.

Last time I did this I found one 40% silver half in 1000. It's not worth it at all:
- the time spent going through the rolls
- the time spent returning the coins to the bank and have them rolled up again (unless you spend them - see below)
- the cashback you lose out on in paying by cash rather than with a cashback credit card (mine pays 1% which amounts to $5 for a $500 spend)
Unless you're lucky and find at least 10 or so 40% halves you better not engage in such activities.
The last time I did it I put all the junk in a bucket which broke once I wanted to lift it off the floor! Duh! It cost me another $1.07 from DollarTree... :)

I feel the same as 52Raymo; you had success!!

I have NEVER found any silver in any boxes of coins. I tried half dollar boxes for awhile but I never found any silver, and the extra fees from the bank for halves was getting me broke. So don't pout that you had an above average search in your box.

Last week I did four boxes and found four proofs and a 64 Kennedy. The best thing was that two of the proofs were silver. A 1968 40%er and 1996 90%er that someone broke out of a silver proof set and spent it. So that was cool, never found a silver proof before but found two last week. The other two proofs were clad, a 79 and 93, I think.

2, 40%-ers in 1 box is great based on my experience! I've searched 55 half boxes and averaged 1, 40%-er for every 2 boxes , and 1, 90%-er for every 5 boxes

I would be happy with that. I only found 3 40%ers in my last box.

Went through two boxes yesterday-Skunked both of them. I'd be more than happy with those finds.

These kinds of paltry results influenced my decision to search pennies instead of half dollars. The days of easy silver are over in my opinion.

I personally feel that the best bet for a big money CRH score comes from searching for rare die varieties and errors and for that I chose pennies because there's lots to find and it does not tie up large sums of money to search them. It would tie up $500 at a time to do a half dollar box of 1000 coins but for only $25 I can search 2,500 cents. Seems like a no-brainer decision to me but maybe I'm being too quick to dismiss half dollars? If anyone here has a different perspective and can demonstrate why it is still worthwhile to search half dollar rolls for profit I'm all ears. Seems like searching half dollars is strictly a hobby pursuit that will never pay for itself given the time and effort and gasoline that must be expended.

Confederate Half, I 100% agree, although I still enjoy looking through boxes of halves when I can get them. I know there is no money to be made, but I enjoy putting together JFK booklets.

Keep at it, I know others that are doing good, especially with these days of low silver prices. Collections are being dumped.

I dont crh per se but I go through lots of change at my stores. Most of the silver I have found in the last few years have been dimes. Mostly Roosevelt s but even a few mercs.
