I found this among my collection and found it very strange, it appears to have been struck with another 50p on top of it, as the reverse of the actual reverse is sunk in rather than raised, it's very strange indeed. Any comments on how this might have happened are welcome. Thanks.

Looks like a brockage. This occurs when a coin is stuck in the die and impresses the reverse design on the next coin minted. That looks like a very nice clear example - I would be happy to have it in my collection.

Thank you eccentric, I was also thinking something like that, as upon closer inspection of the edge after I'd posted the pictures I noticed it has only been pressed about 2/3 of the way down. A coin stuck in the die would account for this I'd imagine.

Probably the nicest brockage I've seen.

Hang on to that one. I do not know the market in England but that should have good value.

I took it for a valuation today and the auctioneer reckons between £70 - £100 which I personally think is quite conservative, I thought it would be a bit more.

StevenV10 Just a small but very important suggestion. Try not to hold any coins with your bare fingers, And WOW! Way cool coin!

That's a great error coin. I love it.

Do you remember how long ago you found it, might help narrow down which year it is.

I guess it would have to be 1981 or earlier - they changed the legend to 'Fifty Pence' in 1982.

I'm not sure that you have a brockage. From your second picture, I cannot tell if all the devices on the reversed side are incuse? (That is, set into the coin rather than struck up).
For example, see hussulo's 1st picture of a brockage at https://goccf.com/t/42462

Hope my instincts are wrong

They are wrong bill, perhaps the picture isn't too clear but the whole impression in pressed into the coin.
