Showing my age again .....

Not the prettiest sestertius you will ever see !

Tuuuuuuesday-Afternoooooooon

Tuuuuuuesday-Afternoooooooon

Note what appears to be a hole (encrusted) in the center. As well as another punch mark in the 'exergue'.
Seller speculates it may have been used as a "phalera" worn on the breastplate of a soldier.
Could be ........

At 63 clams it was too good to pass

Cyber Tuesday !
Seller is reliable and as is usual gave no info !
So I leave the attribution to the 'young at heart'
hint ...... I hope it is 34-5 mm

Normally I might have passed on something this rough. But ....... I could see the face of Caligula, the two attendants and the bull getting his throat cut. Having purchased from the seller before I have the expectation that it may actually be one of those much desired "better in hand" variety. The sellers pics are not the best (the ones shown were improved on by myself) and his selection of auction close not the best either ! 12:02PM EST which would be what ...... 5 o'clock in Europe and 9AM in California and on a Tuesday !

Not a gem but it does fill up an empty spot on the cheap!

Edit

I neglected to send a thanks to 'Jimbo'!
The link was quite useful and informative

Nice, I would have jumped on it too. Are you going to try and clean it up a bit?

Does not look like it has much cleaning potential. The patination is probably the only reason it has any detail left at all ! The center hole is best left plugged with encrustation.
If anything something to darken the patina might help make it look more 'venerable'.

Soaking it in olive oil for a time will darken it some.

Well the Moody Blues did come to mind

What I just noticed a few hours ago is that in the pic the 'hole' appears to be rectangular and somewhat larger on the obverse than the reverse. Like a nail head.
The thought had occurred to me that if it were indeed a "phalera" that punching a hole through the emperors mid section might be a dangerous thing for a man in uniform to do ! Unless of course the 'damage' was fixed neatly to make the coin appear whole.

Will be interesting to examine firsthand. I expected an encrusted center hole but it looks more like a 'plug' now. Time will tell.

I like it even more !

I find the speckled coloring really interesting myself. I wouldn't say I prefer it to a more preserved sample, but I have a couple coins in my collection that have the same sort of pitting and coloring and it makes a cool contrast to most of my other coins.
