Hi All,

I'm not a collector, so I was wondering if I could get an opinion on the grade of this coin I had lying around. Any other information about the coin would be appreciated. Sorry about the photo quality, thats about the clearest I could get, the photo makes the details look a bit more blunt than actual condition, especially around the stars.

Thanks.

Hi Falco5, and welcome to the forum!

I would grade your Morgan dollar as a VF-35 (Very Fine-35). In case you don't know, coins are graded on a scale of 1 to 70, with 1 being a coin that is barely recognizable while 70 would be a perfect uncirculated coin. At the VF-35 level, your coin is right in the middle of the scale. It is definitely worn, but the major details are mostly sharp and clear.

The 1892 is a somewhat better date in the Morgan dollar series. There are many fake Morgans in the market today, although I don't think the 1892 is valuable enough to be an attractive target for most counterfeiters. Your coin (if real) is probably worth somewhere around $40 to $50. I suggest you check the weight. A genuine uncirculated Morgan dollar weighs about 26.73 grams. Metal is lost as the coin wears, but at the VF-35 grade level I would guess it should still weigh at least 25.5 grams. If the weight is much less than that, it's probably a fake.

Again, welcome!

Greetings and Welcome to the forum Falco5. I would say that the silver dollar is Very Fine 30/35 in condition. Thank yoy for sharing pictures.

Take Care
Ben
