On another thread discussing an 1885 Newfoundland ten cents one of our fellow members showed us pictures of two high grade Newfoundland fifty cents, 1882H and 1885.
After some high level "detective " work I got to the bottom of it.
There is a seller in Germany on ebay.de selling the following lots of Counterfeit Newfoundland coins.
1872 2 dollar gold, 1882 H 2 dollar gold, 1904 H fifty cents, 1919 C fifty cents, and of course the two fifty cents that our 47P7 brought to my attention 1882 H and 1885 fifty cents. The seller is "Doppeleffekt" with a current rating of 54. If you do not want to get burned be careful! In German he couches what he says by claiming they came in a large lot and that they may or may not be real. All the usual story "nonsense".
It certainly pays to have a wife who is fluent in German and French as well as English.

Moderator........I hope my warning is within the rules .If not please let me know ! TY JN

I am still learning the ropes around here, but I think your post is perfectly acceptable. In fact, I am tempted to move to the main Canadian Forum, and possibly even the Main Coin Forum - because counterfeits are something I have worked with Mike Marshall for the past several years, and informing the collector base is paramount.

Please do what is best for the community Roger. I just cannot stand this stuff being out there. It destroys the faith that people have in numismatics as a great hobby!

In my searches for Newfoundland coins I came across a gold Newfoundland from a seller in Germany. The wording made in the auction seemed odd, but it did state that the coin was not real authentic but rather a copy. This was a few months back and I didn't think much of it. I found the auctions you are talking about and it is very likely that the coin I was looking at was from that seller as well.

In some other areas of coins I collect, I have noticed the sudden production of copies over the years. It seems a lot of these reproductions are coming out of or near Germany. Some sellers list them as copies, and others act very shady and deceptive.

Thanks for posting this. Just another thing to be aware of.

See Pacific, with a little sniffing around, you were successful. Good for you. I knew you have the right assistant.
As I said, I have a police file on this one. However, they will not disclose a lot until things are done. Except that 2 countries are involved.
This is # 14 in the last 8 years that I reported there to police. Usually they act on it. we shall see, as I will be informed of the outcome.
I have pictures of the other coins if anyone wants to see the top grades on them.
However, the question of HOW these 50 cent pieces were , or at least one of them was fast recognized, is still outstanding. the answer is perhaps key to recognizing others that might come our way.
here are the coins again
there is one major marker.

So I have put the word out to quite a few antique shops and pawn shops around New England that I'm always interested in buying bulk world or high end Canadian or Newfoundland...

I get a call from a guy who owns an antique mall that that a new guy just opened a booth, and among other items, he put in a whole bunch of high grade Canadian and Newfoundland Half dollars...

As soon as I got out of work, I drove a couple of hours hoping to end up with a big score...

This is what I got...

All obviously fakes but this was a couple of years ago... Even in a thinly traded market there are counterfeits of even common date NFLD pieces

Further digging two more of our German ebay friends Robwagrob (19) phony Newfoundland 1870 gold, Schnuckelrine97 (754) 1888 Newfoundland $2.00 gold counterfeit. Isn't lovely boys. Just go to ebay.de type in Newfoundland Kanada or Neufundland and watch the carnage. Report all of it as you find it ! I would hate to thing that all of Mikes work has gone for naught.

One of doppeleffekt's listings translates as

"Hello !
I offer you here 2x unknown 50 cent coins? Medals.
Any samples ?
Authenticity is not guaranteed.
The coins are silver plated , weigh too little for silver coins in use ."

Listed as "Unbekannte 2x 50 Cents 1904 & 1919 Edwardvs VII Newfoundland" - Unbekannte = Unknown. Appears to be the key word for this seller, i.e. "who? me?".

I was always told you learn by experience and hands on.
That does not seem to apply here.
well fellows, No more trying to make it fun to research and hopefully to find the right answer.( you will always remember after you found it yourself)
There is a member here who wrote in no uncertain words that I should look up my own stuff and not expect the forum to do it for me.

easy solution for me, no more challenges.
Some of you obviously want everything put in front of you.
I will no longer care if you do Know or do not know how to recognize a tough obverse or a fake.
I just simply keep my experiences and what I know to myself.
It is that simple!

Pacific........oh, how effective was what?
the listings are alive. some just timed out on ebay.de! the rest will time out on Sunday!
Unless you have the direct link, to it, you will get the removed or listing ended note, even if you have it in your watched items.
The police report is alive with the Police in Brandenburg. that is the only way to go.
AND, Just to get a listing OFF ebay does very little besides getting it off. an hour later it is back with another name or a polish listing. It is just like cutting the tail end off a snake.
It will grow back.
Good luck getting it off before it times out!

It's also important to note that counterfeit/fakes can sneak under the radar of some of the more seasoned folks as well. Case and point: at this Fall's Geoffrey Bell Auction at Toronto Coin Expo, I was viewing lots before the auction started. The gentleman sitting adjacent to me at the viewing table was looking at a series of gold coin lots. Among the grouping of gold lots he was examining, he identified 2 lots of fakes. He immediately notified the auctioneer (Brian), who in turn did the correct thing and had those lots removed from the auction sale without hesitation. But, had that gentleman not viewed the lots (or notified the auctioneer), then 2 fakes would've been sold off that night. I'm not blaming or accusing the auctioneers of anything, I'm simply pointing out that even a firm with a long standing and well respected reputation in our world of numismatics can be exposed to the same risks of acquiring/consigning/selling counterfeits.

As for ebay, given their strong pro-buyer/anti-seller policies, I'm noticing a paradigm shift in the quality and overall availability of genuine and desirable coins now vs. a year ago; along with a stark jump in Chinese knock-offs of pretty much everything. I haven't bought off ebay since earlier in the summer, although I do browse routinely.

Ok, enough with the drama. This is your first, last, and only warning. Start acting like an adult or your done here. It's getting old.
