I like the design, too. In anticipation of the beaver being more popular than the owl, the RCM upped the mintage by 10k to 100k though (same as polar bear).

Its nice but 100k mintage turns me off, but I don't suppose the Mint will ever make a XforX "proof" coin with a low mintage of say under 10k...

The flick of the tail, the splash on the water, the flinging droplets in an arc, the bubbles under water, the motion, and a predator on land that is startled. Lots going on and I think one of the better efforts in a while from the RCM, even if the beaver is done to death, do not penalize this coin, mintage of these are always high, so no complaining here either, a superior effort, and when my self imposed hiatus (Jan. 1 2015) is over I will look for this, or maybe hint at a nice stocking stuffer.

Yes indeed this is a strong design and I will pick up 2 to keep my sets going. I will wait until it's its half sold. This will make it easier on my credit card. I still need the owl. I think this is the best beaver followed by the latest color beaver at work. The animal with motion, I find are much stronger designs.

Yeah, great design, looks genuine to me.
I've not bought any $50x$50 so far.
Is it a wolf who is looking at the beaver?

NewMooseMatist, what is the pad under the grandpa beaver for?
Speaking of the coin itself: it's one of those beaver coins I seriously consider (I love beavers, moose, walruses, and other large Canadian mammals). But since it's not even a full ounce, I consider its size to be not big enough (1 oz would be better for such a good design).

The "pad" is his or her tail. Great battered, deep fried and powdered with sugar and cinnamon.
A great dessert for the wolf.

Quote: what is the pad under the grandpa beaver for? That is his Tail! Quote: Why do beavers have such a big flat tail? • The beaver's tail has important uses both in the water and on land - in the water, the animal uses its flexible tail as a four-way rudder; on land the tail acts as a prop when sitting or standing and acts as a counter balance when carrying building material. • When diving after being frightened, a beaver loudly slaps the water with its tail; the sound warns all beavers in the vicinity that danger is near. • The tail stores fat, and because it is nearly hairless, releases body heat, helping the beaver to regulate its body temperature. http://www.landscouncil.org/beavers..._beavers.asp

I think Emily Damstra has a good sense of humour. Plus it is very rare (unique?) when you see another animal on the coin which is unrelated to main character/theme. I find this coin very joyful. Needles to say that I've ordered one.

Quote: Looks like the wolf is making dinner plans... I don't think so (if that wolf is smart that is lol), beavers can be very dangerous. Quote: Vicious Beaver Attacks and Kills Man in Belarus
The 60-year-old former serviceman was on a fishing trip at Lake Shestakov, Belarus, with two companions when the group stopped to snap the animal by the side of the road, according to the Daily Telegraph. But the incensed rodent viciously pounced on the victim and bit his thigh.
And similar incidents have also occurred in the U.S.; two young sisters escaped with only scratches during an encounter with a beaver at a lake in Virginia in July, according to the Daily Mail; while an 83-year-old woman was hospitalized in September after being mauled in Fairfax County, Va., reports the Washington Post.
Beavers have extremely powerful jaws and sharp teeth that they use for gnawing through trees to build dams on rivers. Anyone coming across beavers in the wild is advised not to approach or make them feel in any way trapped or harassed.
http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/04/12...-in-belarus/I actually know of a person who was attacked by a beaver in my area , he saw the beaver on a bridge and thought he would try and move it to safer location as he thought the beaver might get run over, but when he went near the thing it attacked and bit his leg/legs and he was bleeding badly but was able to get to a hospital , but he said he didnt think he was going to make it from the amount of blood he figured he lost. So stay well clear of beavers! They can be savage.
