Coin collecting spurred an interest in metal detecting, with great success in finds including hundreds of silvers and many from the mid-1800's. At about the same time, roll hunting, which has given up thousands of silvers. Bottle collecting through excavation has given up hundreds of old-tyme medicines, bitter, beers and sodas.

After years of claiming how disinterested I was in history, coin collecting has turned this around completely. Evidently I was just disinterested in the manner in which history was taught, not the content itself.

As a writer, coin collecting has enabled me to get different coin writing assignments and interested me in editing the local (currently) and regional (past) clubs' newsletter.

Chemistry. When I was a kid I used to try to see how far I could make a coin fly using my own home made explosives. Eventually became a chem teacher. Not really a hobby, but coins started it.

Started collecting coins and now I'm mainly into US Paper Money, obsoletes, etc. Really enjoy the art and history of these pieces of paper.

Stamp collecting (since 1967) came before coin collecting (since 1969), in my case. Regardless, both generated a tremendous interest in political history, archontology and constitutional government for which I received a graduate degree in political science in 1984. The philatelic, numismatic and political history library I own numbers in the thousands of books.

I guess my love of history as a kid did make me like coins more. I was never into currency or stamps, they just seemed so easily destroyed that I was afraid of them. The hobby has made me want to do metal detecting but I haven't dove into that yet.

I started stamp collecting for a few years. I no longer consider myself a stamp collector, but I still have my Harris album and will keep interesting stamps that come my way. I was an avid MOD file collector. I probably just as much time aquiring, sorting, and cataloging MOD files. For what it is worth, I have a player on my phone.

I collect coins most actively but I pull paper money out of circulation if it catches my eye. I also collect rocks and minerals (less actively).
These hobbies did not originate together (maybe paper money stemmed off a little from coins) but they have now become connected.
Rocks and minerals connect to coins and paper money in an interesting way. I went to a rocks and minerals (and gemstone) show expecting to pick up some cool specimans when I was hooked by this booth that had mostly silver jewelry and the like. He had some trays of world paper money and world coins/tokens from which I pulled a "few" out. He asked me if I was interested in coins and paper money and I obviously responded "yes!" He showed me some of his coin inventory. The connection: [some] coins = silver = a mineral = rocks and minerals! I never expected to find a coin dealer at a rocks and minerals show. I was pleasantly surprised! (although severely under prepared with money)

coin collecting led me to pursue metal detecting, as a young country the better finds tend to be old British coins, but I don't complain, I still love digging up a penny. The history side of collecting is interesting too, I'm doing a degree in history at university with emphasis on military aspects, so the occupation coins I am fascinated with
