I'm just curious about how many collectors this has happened to.
One of the obvious interests a collector might pick up from collecting would be history, or historical research. I have only done a small amount of such reading.
My spin off interest has accumulated in the area of ancient artifacts - jewelry, pottery, weapons, etc...
This of course came from learning about ancient coins, their history, their value, and their extravagance.
I am now spending time looking for ancient things to give as gifts this Christmas. Edited by scottk 12/06/2014 3:24 pm

Modern banking? due to coin collecting I have learned how poor the entire system is and that banks only exist to serve businesses, and since they have time to spare while they wait for those high $$$ business deposits they deal with the unwashed masses so they aren't just paying tellers to sit around and wait for lunch hour for the business customers to wander in to make deposits. Also the unwashed masses money is what the bank uses to invest in bad stock market decisions, because they aren't allowed to use business accounts money, and also to offer to other people as loans, to overcharged on lending fees.

I've always liked old stuff and have hoarded books and rocks, etc. But since getting somewhat serious about the coin collecting, I have grown interested in currency and tokens etc. I admit that's not very far from coins but I do find myself spending a bit of time looking up the history of some company that gave out tokens ages ago.

No, coin collecting hasn't led me anywhere,
But what led me to coin collecting is a love of history and of shiny things.

Coin collecting led to my second hobby photography, as well as taught me about economic history

It was actually my interest in Japanese history that got me started in collecting coins.

Stamp collecting. Since I buy most of my coins online, I somehow started saving the interesting stamps that came on the envelopes.

. Looking at coins led me to see stamps, old tins, antique books. Some of these I sell on to fund the main hobby.

My coin collecting led me to join a coin club (of which I am now Secretary), which in turn led me to an increased interest in other branches of numismatics - medals and tokens.
