Hi everyone,

If this is in the wrong forum I apologize.

I had a question about dateless barber/standing liberty quarters. I bought a good amount of silver halves, quarters and dimes for melt not long ago. Most of the lot was Barber quarters and SLQs. Most of them have dates so that isn't a problem but my question is whether there is a way to tell the dates on the "dateless" ones. I can see the mint-mark or no mint-mark but the date itself is not visible.

Without using acid and whatnot, I don't suppose there is really a way to find out? I have found several 1917 Type I SLQs as they are easier to distinguish without the stars under the eagle.

Thanks in advance for any guidance that can be provided.

To the best of my knowledge there is no equivalent for silver like Nic-A-Date is for nickels.

On the SLQs you can look at the reverse and see if there are stars or not below the eagle. If no stars they coin is either 1917 or 1916. Once you isolate that you MIGHT be able to tell if it is 1917 or 1916 by some features on the obverse. Search a bit on "identifying a 1916 Standing Liberty quarter" and I am sure you will find some info.

Even dateless 1916's are worth a lot (a grand anyway) so you should learn to identify that coin.
Otherwise they are all worth melt, which could be a good time to acquire now with prices so low.

This link could help you to identify if your dateless Type 1 are 1916 or 1917. http://www.slqcoins.us/educational.html
