Wondering why the JFK is toned and not any other silver/other coins in this mint set? Or is it an error of some sort? The reverse is about 60% toned. Thanks in advance Edited by Hummingbird 12/06/2014 5:35 pm

Welcome! You mean Kennedy rather than Ike. There is probably an issue with that specific section of the packaging since it has not affected the other silver coins.

Thanks for the correction. Another question. Could this be caused by being in a smoker's home? I note the slight appearance of this on the Cent and nickel.

I don't know how true it is but I have read that people have had issues with rubber bands leaving discoloration through the plastic after some period of time being wrapped around a set. If this is true then maybe something was sitting on top of the set and Kennedy got the worst of it. I would like to think the packaging is safe for the coins but its possible it isn't or something got sealed in.
Edit: I would think if this is caused from a smoker then the same effect would be shown on all the coins in the same manner. So I would say that is most likely not the cause.

Neo13x I like and appreciate your comments and agree with them.
I noticed that you didn't blame the rubber band on the JFK toning but related to something sitting on top of the mint set. I am a victim of the old rubber band wrapped around the stack of coins. The rubber band imparts a distinct black line on the, as in my case, silver coin, without any marks on the wrapper.

I've found in a tube and some nickel proof coins in the mint cello that some toning on them. So the the wrapping would have an effect on them, but the other silver coins not affected seem strange. Is there a break in the cello in that area?

I once bought a Monnaie de Paris French FDC set with a 100-franc silver coin that was toned in a similar way, though not quite so badly. All the other coins were perfect. Close examination revealed a split about half-an-inch long in the 'envelope' containing the 100F coin. I also think this set had been badly stored - the outer packaging was stained and very tatty.

Thanks NumisRob, I'll check the packaging for a slit or opening. Packaging is not tattered or stained.

Coop, I missed observing your comments. You know when you come into the CoinCommunity via eMail, it takes you right to that referenced post. Next time I will scroll around to make sure I don't miss any more comments. Thank you for your comments Coop. No tares, openings at all in the cello wrap, not even a pin hole. To make sure, I ran the whole packet under the scope. Even tried blowing air into the seals around the 50c JFK. I did discover that the seal between the dime and the half, as shown in red arrows, was separated. Hummmmm....why isn't the dime tarnished? That's it for now. Looking forward to comments.

The movement may have happened more recently. Perhaps dropped at sometime and moved it way into the next opening. I would check the coins and see if any are doubled dies and split up the package. That year has some doubled dies on them. Cent, Nickel and dimes have loads of the them but are often minor.

Thanks Coop. I've had this set for many years. JFK was toned when purchased in a sealed envelope from a supposedly honest ebay seller. Yep, I will separate the packets and add to my pile of mint sealed coins for an upcoming ebay listing.
