I am pretty new to numismatics - been fiddling around for less than a year.
Morgans seem to be the easiest for me. I can usually get within a point from the images posted in the grading forum. Early coppers are a totally different story though. I've been interested in late date (1839-1857) large cents for just a couple of months.
I really have a terrible time discerning xf from low ms even using the pcgs app, and to notice cleaning, recoloring, or other less obvious problems... forget it - no chance.
I'm actually emailing a lot of sellers and coin dealers and asking them questions about coins because I just can't tell from pics.
I know it comes with experience. Did you experience this trouble with any of your favorite coin types when you first got interested in them?
Scott.

I usually don't buy coins online, because you really can't tell what an image is hiding, whether it is meant to or not. For me, the toughest coins to grade from pics are Buffalo nickels and AU-low MS Washington quarters. Many Buffalos are weakly struck to begin with, and that coupled with dull lighting can be very deceiving. I have trouble grading Washingtons in AU-low MS anyway, but if the pics are bad, I can't for the life of me tell the difference.

Buffalo nickels are kind of tough, not as bad as pre-33 gold though. Early copper is also kind of hard unless you have experience with it. Barber coinage, wheat cents, and mercs are easy though!

I'd have to say Capped Bust Halves give me the most trouble with grading. Some I get fairly close, but others - I obviously use a different grading scale.

All of them. You don't know what's been done with a photo.

All of them unless the photographs were taken by a very experienced coin photographer and even then some can be difficult. When buying coins online ALWAYS buy them from a reputable dealer you can trust.

Early AU or better copper coins and Bust Halves are the hardest for me.

I never buy on line especially from a photo. Way to many stories of wrong coins sent, wrong coin in photo, lousy photo, touched up photo, etc. Just not worth it for me.
