Do you loathe them?

I saw one seller on ebay who had a brilliant campaign going. She would occasionally toss in a valuable coin into one of the rolls, and then post the feedback that person left in the item description. Her rolls were selling for $40-$60 each. Someone had found a $1 gold piece... lol.

I don't really have any problem with these people. If someone feels like gambling, that's their business. If the seller buys wheat cents in bulk, the tosses in a nice coin every once in a while and says the rolls are "unsearched", I don't have a problem with that. If the seller actually has searched the roll, doesn't add anything fun to it, and then sells it for more than it's worth, then that's no good imo.

Do you see these people as scammers/criminals? I read so many comments in the forums about how ridiculous some of the bidding is on "unsearched" coin lots that I don't really know what the general consensus is with most collectors.

Sort of like the " unsearched " baseball and hockey card craze of the early 1990's. That said any smart dealer would never offer unsearched stuff or say it is unsearched. The profit potential is just too big to pass up. How many sealed bags or original rolls of Morgan and Peace dollars do you see these days.......................that is what I thought ...................not many!

Only slightly more likely to happen then a unsearched clear mason car of coins with possible key dates.

When I started collecting I bought a few of those and have since quickly realize the scam on ebay. but once I got key dates from a none collector who sold a unsearched lot but they didnt sell coins ever before was a inherited lot but that is very rare. my lcs dont care about anything but slabbed, silver or gold so wheat bags there are unsearched as he has no care to search them buys for 2 cents sell for 4 cents.

In all seriousness, as much as I hate seeing an "original" bank roll of Morgans go for $3K, I can't say I blame the sellers. There is a market apparently, as we have so many ill-informed people buying these lots. Fools and their money will soon part ways. Besides, the cheaper listings (like a roll of wheat cents for $10) are basically harmless, and might introduce people to the hobby.

I bought a bag of wheats from a flea market like this but atleast I got 250 wheat pennies for $10. Most of it was junk but it was fun.

I feel sorry for those who spend their money for these "unsearched rolls". I only hope that they learn from their mistakes as their isn't much that can be done other than to share our opinions when we have the chance.

There is no such thing as unsearched rolls of old circulated coins. Somebody, somewhere, at some time has looked at those coins.

There is no Santa Claus, either.

In 1000BC, Athenian street vendors were selling fake Egyptian relics from 2000BC. Nuthin' new under the sun.

I don't loathe them, I loathe what they do. IMO they are scammers and criminals when they lie to deceive the potential buyer. I actually feel sorry for most of them. Pretty pathetic really.

Well, not too much difference from Mistery Bags being offered by Colonial Acres, an official dealer: http://www.colonialacres.com/category/1693/day-8

That's kind of the page that I'm on arianzo. It's just like being a kid and buying a certain box of cereal because there's a mystery toy inside.

As long as people get something interesting for the price they pay, it doesn't seem that bad.

I would see it a bit differntly though when some poor sap who just doesn't know any better shells out $9000 or $10,000 for an unsearched "bank of carson city" Morgan roll.
