Check out the rim on this cent (from the 9:00 to 10:00 area). Is this a Cud or die chip? Also the "LIBE" are missing from "LIBERTY". Think this is caused by a grease/polished die. All the scratches make me think someone/thing cleaned/rubbed the coin.

I still haven't figured these out yet. I have many on various dates of post 1982 Plated cents. The only thing that seems consistent about them is that the planchets used seemed thicker.

I havent done any kind of study on these specifically. It is the result of the strike but as I said, I don't know why yet. It does not have the typical " Struck Through Grease" look and I am not sure that that would be the case.

The striations or marks are not a result of the coin being cleaned.

I am just not sure how they happen.

The edge issue can be a slight collar Cud. OR.. If your coin is thicker can just be extra metal that was squeezed up between the collar and the die.

The thoughts in this post may be subject to extensive revision if I figure out what the deal is with these coins.

Thanks,
Bill

Looks similar to mine. And I have no idea what it is either.

Hey Foundinrolls, I didn't even think to check out the edge. It is thicker(taller) between the 9:00 and 10:00 area I asked about. I'm just trying to figure out what to label this.

Hey Jorge, yours does have the same "worn down" look. But I guess if it was "post Mint" we would be able to see some zinc. Just kinda strange how most of the detail on Lincoln is worn but no silver/gray is showing. In fact your is worn about as much as most of my wheat cents are.

Andygrill's coin was weakly struck on a thick planchet.

Jorgy's coin was struck through a lot of grease.

Neither coin is worn, and both came out of the mint that way. They are both errors, but Andygrill's coin is far more common an occurrance than Jorgy's coin.

I would generally say that a Grease Filled Die strike is very common and worth little to no premium value, but there are always exceptions, and this coin is the exception. It has enough detail obliterated to be worth a modest premium.

Andygrill,
I know mine isn't post mint damage as I found it and a couple others like it though not quite as good, from a mint sewn bag. I got the bag to search for the 1995 DDO but these and a few of the coins with the die cracks is all I found out of the ordinary.

Thanks Chuck, I kinda thought grease too but to me it just seemed too smooth textured. Must have been clean grease and not just buildup. Do they coat the new dies in grease during storage to prevent corrosion?
