I found this one on a roof that I was working on. A local coin shop said that there are 3 languages on it. Another said that it may be a "Military" coin. I dont have a clue. It is slightly larger than a U.S. nickel and weighs 4.4 Grams.

We recently had a member post a similar looking coin in this thread. His one was made of copper, and deduced to be a fake.

As to what it is, it's a very early Spanish piece, issued in the time of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (of Columbus fame), sometime in the period 1469-1504 (coins back then didn't normally have dates on them; we often can't be any more precise than that). Judging by the weights quoted by Swamperbob in the other post, I'm not sure whether it's a 1 real or 2 real coin; your weight falls in between the two.

Unfortunately, 1450-1600 is still largely a gap in my coin knowledge - The only books I have covering it are for dollar-sized, gold and British coins.

Swamperbob is the expert in Spanish coins, particularly at telling whether it's fake or fair dinkum.

This is an original Spanish coin when it was born. I believe it was worth 4 or 8 reales. But it has a marking at one side of the coin, which tells me that it was confiscated by Dutch Rebellion Troops, and used as legal tender throughout the Netherlands. Maybe this coin was transported to the USA aboard the Mayflower in 1620.

Here is a 1711 Spanish 2 Reale which KINDA looks like the one shown. I'd venture to say based upon it's size in relation to the nickel it's a 1 Reale.

Sap you are correct - this is a duplicate of the coin from the earlier thread. I did a side by side match to compare the blundered legends and they are identical. So unfortunately it is one of the Modern Tourist copies most likely made before 1984. The color makes it look more like brass than copper.

The coin at the right is the one from the earlier thread. It is in my collection now. The one one the right is from this post. They are not just the same type - they are IDENTICAL.

I hit the wrong button and posted this before I was finished editing, but if you look at the two pictures above, you should be able to see that the letters match. Since these letters are fantasy shapes, the coin is a match. Also notice the deep square element at the center of the shield. All features (most importantly including all the errors) match. It is too bad that I could not upload the full size shots because the detail is better.

Thanks, swamperbob. I didn't want to condemn it outright, because I'm unfamiliar with the series and don't know what a genuine one is supposed to look like. I did some checking on CoinArchives and couldn't find a 2 reales, but I did find this 4 reales from the same series.

SAP - if you notice the legend on the 4R that you copied from the auction records uses standard latin lettering. The fantasy copy uses shapes that are not actual letters.
