Has This Coin Been Varnished Or Another Coating - Removal?

Topcat7 Pillar of the Community 1121 Posts	Posted 12/09/2014 7:14 pm I have this silver coin that has this (brown) coating that I thought was varnish, however after a couple of days in the Acetone bath, there is no change. Am I on the right road? Can anyone think of another cleaning method that I might try on this Denarius, please? (All photos are of the same coin in different lights. The first photo is the closest to what I can see.) Report this Post to the Staff

echizento Moderator United States 23731 Posts	Posted 12/09/2014 7:33 pm It does look like old varnish/lacquer. The acetone might not be strong enough to remove it. You can try soaking it for a longer time or you may just want to leave it along. Report this Post to the Staff
Ancientnoob Pillar of the Community United States 5155 Posts	Posted 12/09/2014 8:02 pm I wouldn't be too worried about it but if it's an old varnish or lacquer Gasoline (petrol) would take it off and not do anything to the silver. Report this Post to the Staff

I have 'lost' some other coins because I left them 'in' too long (in other solutions). A.N. - Thanks for the 'tip'. I wasn't sure about using Petrol because I hadn't heard anyone suggest it before.
