been a while since I found anything good to post but finally today I received a surprise in my change. sorry for the crap picture there is a horn on the nose though.

I wrote a column on that variety, in the September 2013 CN Journal. Those of you who are members of the RCNA have digital access to all the archived copies of the CN Journal.

This variety is from a die chip next to the nose of the bear. I canl share with you the figure I used in that column, which shows the variety.

interesting, there are lots of varieties with the 1996 toonie!

It's not a polar bear, it's a rhino wearing a polar bear suit

I think the lots of varieties bit was because they minted these in vast quantities. It's also the first year for the RCM to mint bimetallic coins, so they might get a little mistake here and there. If you look at 2001 MPPS coins, some of them look pretty messed up.
