Excellent finds. The coin are in great shape. I like the artifact. I wonder from what time period it is and what it was used for?

Nice coins. Quote: I like the artifact. I wonder from what time period it is and what it was used for? Yep, the artifact looks interesting. Maybe a latch for a lock or an ancient beer bottle opener.

Thanks guys, the artefact is a clothes fastener , either celtic or early roman .

The loop was sewn to one side of the coat or cloak and the square part fitted into a slit in the joining part of the coat , the same as toggles on coat today .

That makes sense. The design looks like a three leaf clover, which makes me think it's Celtic. Very interesting piece.

Nice Carausius. However, its not a PAX AVGGG, its the much rarer PAX AVGG edition (RIC V-2, London 140). Also of note, its one of the only issues with Pax holding victory on a globe instead of the regular olive branch.

And I get excited about finding things over 50 years old. It must be a real thrill to find coins from centuries/millenia ago! Great finds. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comments and thank you for the id Ben, just out of curiosity - how can you tell ? Is there a give away or is it down to experience ?

Well, the bust of the PAX AVGGG issue is quite uniform - by that time the mint had stopped issuing variety and had settled its designs. This didnt look like the AVGGG bust. Also, Pax is holding a victory on globe - a feature ive not seen before. The legend break is not that seen in PAX AVG, so I was wondering what it read - it could have been an early PAX AVGGG, or perhaps one of the odd legends (like PAX CARAVSI). So I checked the RIC spreadsheets which quickly narrowed it down to the PAX AVGG issue.
I havent read up on it, but I assume PAX AVGG appears just before the PAX AVGGG issue. They are listed as much rarer than PAX AVGGG (of which ive had 3 - never seen an AVGG show up though).
