I'm thinking it's most likely an 1886. Somewhat odd defacement of the legend, possibly due to a faulty strike.

Attributing chopmarks is almost impossible, as records weren't kept of specifically which was used by a particular merchant, although they were in their day recognized as belonging to one or the other of that community. Certain chopmarks consisting of Chinese characters may of course be read, but neither of these seem to be in that class.

Yes,1886 is about the closest if we look at the shape left over.
If I look under the microscope the defacement it is definitely a strike error
since there is no wear visible other then normal scratches from circulation.
Chopmarks : Wouldn't that be great,if someone would start a serious reserch
for all those unknown chopmarks....
