I usually hang out in the Ancient Coin section, But I have a few medals that over the next few days I wish to share with you.

This first one is my favorite, It is a reproduction of the original 1882 medal designed by Barber

The Great Seal of The United States of America

Obverse: America Bald Eagle with shield. In his beak head holds a banner with the words E Pluribus Unum, (Out of many one) his head is surrounded by thirteen star indicating the 13 orginal states. His Talons hold a Olive branch and Arrow. His beak is facing the Olive branch which indicates peace.

Reverse: Depicts an unfinished thirteen tier Pyramid with the bottom having the Roman numerals MDCCLXXVI (1776), above that is the detached top with the All Seeing Eye in the center. Above that is the Latin legend Annuit Coeptis ( Taken to mean He favors our Undertakings). Beyond the base of the Pyramid is the Latin legend Novus Ordo Seclorum (New order of the ages)

The dates 1782 and 1882 are on either side.
The medal is made of Bronze is 62mm X 124.4 grams (4.39 Oz)

The next one is from France and awarded to a person named Marmottan. Marmottan lived in the 19th century and was a patron of the arts. He established a museum in Paris which still exists today.

Obverse: REBUBLIQUE FRANCAISE around the border. The center figure is Liberty holding a scroll with the articles of the French Constitution. Below that are the partial word of the French Motto Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite, below that a various images of artistic pieces. In her left hand she holds a Olive Branch, beyow that is a bee hive and plow.

Reverse: The inscription surrounded by a wreath reads in French
19 JUIN 1879
L'ASSEMBLEE NATIONALE 'VOTE
LA RENTREE A PARIS
DES POUVOIRS PUBLICS
(sorry I don't know the meaning)
Marmottan name is engraved below that

for the second medal , the translation is : The parlement has voted the start of the new session of the public powers .It very difficult to translate it litterally .Until 1980,the assemblée nationale was elected for 5 years maximum , but could be dissolved every year, what happens usualy .this period begins on june,19,1879 and ends on october 31 1879. The name Marmottan refers to JUles M. , I think , who had a son Paul M .Jules Marmottan was a solicitor and collecting art as his son did ,after whose death has been created the museum . Do you kwow the maker of the medal , his name is usualy written on the obverse . Albert
