That is an incredibly rare coin. Too bad about the scratch, but these things happen. PCGS/NGC should grade it, but it will be a details grade due to the scratch. I don't see any signs of environmental damage. Details looks XF to me. Due to its rarity, you should definitely get it in a TPG holder. Even with the scratch I would not be surprised if it brought $10k or more. Congratulations on your find. That's worthy of a Coin World article.

Nice find! Either way; having it sold at a "big house" auction or selling it yourself, authetication is a must! If you consign it to be auctioned off, they will have it authenticated (at your expense by deducting the fee from the end sale). One way or another it needs to be slabbed by PCGS, NGC or ANACS.

Thanks for the info and the warm welcome! I really would like to see 10K for it, but I'm just grateful to even be in this position.

The major grading services will be at the FUN show in Florida (I think Orlando) and Long Beach, CA next month. If you are near those locations I would suggest that you take the coin directly to PCGS or NGC rather than worry about it getting lost in the mail. For a coin of that price if it were me I would pay the higher fee for the walk-through service. Even if I didn't live near either of those locations for a coin like this I might just take a few days off and travel!

This 01 S looks legit. VG details is the grade, IMHO.
I would have this slabbed or make a deal with one of the auction houses to have slabbed.
Another option, walk through grading at one of the major shows.

I had no idea there was such a thing as "walk through grading" I'll keep that in mind for sure. I'm in Boise but it might be worth the trip. Would ANACS be an option? or would you suggest otherwise?

PCGS or NGC are the way to go. If it were me, I would go with PCGS. A trip to Long Beach, CA in January might be a nice getaway from Boise! The cost to insure the coin on a 2-way trip may be more than an actual trip cost.
Edited to add: The auction houses will be at the major coin shows also, so you can consign to them on the spot without having to bother to mail to them.

Did you know how rare that coin was when you found it, or did you look it up before you realized it?
