If the coin was to be unplated would there be zero trace of copper? Or are there plating errors where there could be trace of copper? Otherwise I'll know I have one here that had the plating removed or corroded off? I'd put pictures up but don't even think the copper trace would show-I see some very small specks/traces of copper and not much at all but it's there, thanks!

If you don't mind, go ahead and post the photos, there are other ways to determine its legitimacy.

Yes, you can have a partially plated cent. However, plating errors are incredibly difficult to authenticate unless the coin is uncirculated with luster present.

There have been coins with partial plating:

Some are unplated:

But note the surface of the fields. How they are smooth, no bumps, almost shiny. Remember the original finish on the 1943 cents? They were steel planchets with zinc coating on them. So they should not be shiny like plated, but dull finished.

There have been some where the plating was covered over with zinc:

Some have removed the plating:

Hope this helps.

It looks stripped or perhaps a soft media blast. I see these from time-to-time during the hunt. Usually a trace of copper left in the sharpest areas between the device and the field.

Here's an unplated specimen from my collection.
