Are rainbow dimes considered more collectible? Found a few and think they are definitely odd looking... at an angle I can see yellow red blue purple and green, straight on in lighting sometimes they just looked stained/damaged.

Not sure how to photograph them, been a challenge. Here is an example.

Ones with original color are very collectible. This one appears AT though.

Updated with different lighting and angle... I'm guessing they use an eye dropper to put some liquid on it?

Artificial toning isn't necessarily deliberate, and I don't think this one was deliberate. Seems to have been exposed to a concentrated source, and probably toned very quickly.

It's not "Natural Toning" because what happened was outside "normal" handling of the coin. Natural toning is rarely found outside Mint State coins because circulation handling wears it off as soon as it appears. So circulated toners are under question from the start.

"Natural" toning happens under storage/preservation conditions. Bags of Morgans sitting in a vault. Whitman albums. It tends to propagate in known patterns but there are exceptions which prevent generalization.

It'll always be a subjective call, and we won't even settle down and adopt a universal definition.

"Nicely" toned Mercs go for a premium, but 'badly' tarnished ones sell at a discount.

Many people like Toned Coins I know I do but natural toning is more desirable than artificially toned and more valuable. Needless to say I have seen some AT coins that were nicely done though.

This is accidental toning verses purposeful toning. Nothing there at all that says this was done purposefully. I do believe it got toned and was then circulated giving it that blotchy appearance. But, there is absolutely ZERO way to say for sure. This coin, IMO, is not the attractive kind of toning I would pay a premium for.

I usually see "rainbows" on pennies, and correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they happen when they are the end of the roll? I have some beautiful pennies toned with yellow, purple, green, and red. I keep all of them !

Rolled coins usually tone because of sulfur in the paper wrap. Only the end coins tone because oxygen is more easily available at the ends than in the center.

So many state the toned coins are very sellable. Yet try selling one. I've heard so many say how they like them, yet at coin shows dealers always tell me they just don't sell well.
