I'm hoping some of the more knowledgeable folks can help me with this area of the Middle East. I've collected foreign coins whenever I've traveled overseas and now my son is going to deploy to the United Arab Emirates. Can anyone tell me if there are certain coins/years he can be on the lookout for? I'm completely at a loss, so I've told him to just pick up a little of each coins for me. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

They have their own currency. Here a few of their coins. http://(131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed /countries/Emirates.html

He'd have a very good opportunity to find coins from a dozen countries there too. I'd tell him to keep every single different coin he finds.

UAE has only been minting their own coinage since 1973 so the current circulating coinage probably won't be worth too much over the exchange rate. Some of the individual states that comprise the UAE (like Ajman and Umm al Qaiwain) used to mint their own coins, but I think that they were not intended for circulation.

I think your so will do well just to pick up some of the current currency and coinage. The current currency is quite beautiful:

and having looked through there current commems (going back to 1976), I have already added at least one item to my impossibly long list of coins I want:

If you check some of the other Arab countries central banks, you will find a number of other sources of both modern and ancient coinage.
The National Bank of Dubai has a very nice museum site for instance:

I am personally a big fan of modern coinage (my disclaimer) and would find plenty to look for in the UAE if I were going. I hope your son has a safe and enjoyable stay in the UAE .
