Wow I just got this from my father in law. He knows I collect coins and he gave me this today. He doesn't collect but had this along with some other silver coins in a box, and I think it's been in his family pretty much since day one. It went right into my 7070 . Thoughts on grade and value? Edited by kevro22 12/19/2014 07:36 am

Now that's a nice X-mas gift! I'll bet it looks pretty sweet in your 7070 too.

Gorgeous! I have the same coin in MS64, and I have to say, yours has more 'character'. I bet you hold yours much much longer than I hold mine. Some things have more value than just dollars.
XF in my opinion, and it definitely was a very sharp strike. Great full head strike.

That is awesome! I hope you shared the history surrounding this coin and the controversy over the design and subsequent redesign of the obverse. Maybe you could inspire him to become a collector!

Beautiful coin Kevro~!! I am going to be shopping for both a Type I and a Type II 1917 in the near future for my 7070. Congrats on the nice gift~!!

Thanks- yes immediately after thanking my father in law profusely, I gave the whole family with a 5 minute presentation on the history of the coin, etc ☺️ This coin was in a small cardboard jewelry box with some other worn common date silver Roosies and a couple of Morgan/Peace dollars he said his mother saved from circulation when she was younger (she's 92 now). He now has those coins for safe keeping but he doesn't collect and isn't doing anything with them. I had seen his coins a few years ago and simply remarked then that this one was special vs the others and to be sure to hang on to it. He knew of all the many family members I'd be the one to take care of and appreciate it, so I guess he had decided that now was time to pass it on and I was to be the one that got it. I just never expected it... Also it just worked out that I'm about 2/3 through my 7070 and had yet to pick up a nice example of this coin for my book.

Don't know enough to grade this coin but the story that goes with it gets an A+. It's great that the family treasures are being treated so well.

The coin is obviously XF45, but the thing that gets me is the head detail. I am going to have to do some research and see if the "Full Head" designation goes beyond AU and BU grades... I don't see why not. It adds greatly to the 'book value'.

Ratio - I've attached a slightly better image of the obverse of this coin. I'm not an expert on this series by any means so I'd be very interested in further expert thoughts on grade and potential value, though as a family item it's not going anywhere beyond my 7070. This is a really beautiful coin in hand.

Gorgeous... The larger image only reinforces that opinion. I am by no means an "expert" on this series, but I am an enthusiastic fan of the series. I know enough that the details on this coin are above average, and that there is a little too much wear to call it AU. I checked with PCGS, and they don't have a "Full Head" designation below AU50. FH only adds about 10 bux to the value of this coin in the AU grades anyway. I think you would just get a premium for this particular coin because of it's even (and beautiful) "circulation cameo", strong strike, and strong details. It seems that this coin in XF ranges from $150-200 in general, however this particular coin is a looker, and might get a premium if you have multiple people interested. Here is a PCGS graded coin that doesn't have near the same eye appeal, and it sold for 'above average' money. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1917-S-Type...047675.l2557

To me, it's very clearly not an AU coin. I'd put it somewhere in the XF range. This one also presents what appears to be some very nice circulation cameo. In some ways I find it more appealing than many AU and even Mint State examples.

Thanks for the feedback- I'm really happy that this coin that hasn't seen the light of day in literally decades is getting some appreciation. I told my family about this page and they thought it was really neat. I just requested this to be my new avatar also 😉

WOW! Great gift to give and receive.
Of note, this particular coin, was from a very fresh set of dies. MONSTER strike. Very square rims with superb fine detail. Besides family history, this one is a KEEPER!!
