I need some help with this. Yesterday I go into my local "We buy gold place" to pick up some junk silver and while waiting my eye catches the 2003 5 coin silver proof State Quarter set in original US mint hard case. It has toning on it and looks incredible but I read in another thread here that toning starts on the edges of the coins and works its way inward toward center. The quarters toning is centered on Washington's entire bust and the center of the reverse side on all 5 coins, but not the edges.

Are these real silver? I did get them for $27.00 but now I'm concerned about authenticity because of the toning pattern.

Thanks for all help on this.

More of a unusual toning pattern but they are probally real. They were most likely either artificially toned, stored improperly or their holder is compromised. Clad doesn't tone as much as silver. Post a picture.

State Quarters are one of my favorite series. I would like to see how the ones you have are toning.

I do have 200+ plus silver proof State Quarters, and have noticed they seem to tone different than other
year quarters. I have them in Dansco albums and still in OGP, they seem to tone more than sets I have
had from the 50's and 60's.

I did pick up a red box proof set a couple weeks ago that the Kennedy was toning different, just the
image of Kennedy is toning ... Not the rest of the coin.

Again if you get a chance ...post a picture.

Just as long as it isn't that white haze that forms on so many of them, all should be well. I got rid of my silver sets a few years back because I could see the white haze coming. The clad sets are as immaculate as when I first received them. IMHO, the mint knows how to handle cupronickel a lot better than silver now.

Toning does not always happen in a uniform set manner. It depends on so many different variables that saying it happens it one particular way is ludicrous.

That aside, lets see some pics if you can.
