Yep, looks like a fake from the "montreal mint", there's 2004 and 2005.

Yeah, I had a 2005 faker but my teen took it and spent it(dummy). I just found another one the other day. It had the same markers as the other I had. I heard there are 04's out there too.

Wow! Got this one from fresh bank roll. Thanks everyone for the replies! Good way to find out what to look for in a fake. Oh, and happy holidays, merry christmas, happy festivus!

Wow I love it! very interesting! notice the inner brass and the nickel ring connection and the lettering the rim and the tiny dots. Excellent example, no doubt a keeper.

Is it true if the words "fake or replica" are counter stamped on the coin, that it would then be legal?

In the US, on a US coin, then yes - as part of the Hobby Act. In Canada, you can stamp whatever you want on it, it will always be illegal, unless you remove the entire word "TWO DOLLARS"...

Stamp a scrub off the and stamp a 0 on top of it so that it reads "0 Dollars"  So, if you sand off or do whatever to remove the writing "2 dollars" while leaving everything else intact, then it is legal to own? Or if someone made a toonie-like thing but it says "no dollars" or something like that, it's not illegal? Edited by Altaira

SPP- This 48 fake dollar was on ebay for sale and was stamped "COPY". I bid on it but lost out. If what your saying is correct and I had won the bid, then it would have been illegal for me to own it? This is not the only one that the seller had for sale.   |

Most people here know " Nickelsguy" is the fake expert frustratingly fighting crime on ebay and such for years now (and hats off to you for that Mikey), but I read in one of his articles about the huge collection of fakes he has. How does that work, special license or something? @ JimmyD can you give us a link to this seller? |

The single string of pearls on the fake toonie is a dead give away.
All fakes should be cut in half and thrown away lest they make
their way back into the system. If they can do it for contraband
firearms then they can do it for coins. Many fakes available.
Justice system should be doing more on this.

This is the link. 121531295457The seller was quite open about it being a fake as he stated it was a brass cast imitation in his description. If it was illegal to sell, I'm sure he was not aware of it. Guess I'm glad I didn't win the bid. |
