Hi this coin is described by the seller as rare and unusual.

Is it?

Supposedly 4th century bc.

Curious also, can anyone tell me why it looks so glossy?

Thanks.

Scott

Can't tell you much about the coin itself but as to the glossiness, it's because it's been overcleaned and any patina that has developed over the millenia has been stripped away to reveal the metal underneath. This is probably a result of wirebrush cleaning or possibly hydrolysis and then with a pin (There are deep scratches on the surface...)

Can't find the type for Syracuse but the type was used in Menainon (also in Sicily - look at Wildwinds) during the 3rd century BC on base metal coinage coinage.
Would agree with 'zxcccxz' on overcleaned, probably used a brass brush as well creating that surface.
With the type minted in several places would not consider it as very unusual and 'rare' is a term thrown around by far too many sellers.
