Hi folks Hope you all have a great xmas. My reason for posting is. I was looking for the different varieties of the 1859 large cent when I noticed 2 on Heritage slabbed by NGC . One of each. But neither of them are either narrow 9 or wide 9. They are in fact just the ordinary date.
I know the differences are minute in the grand scale. But it seems to me they are unaware of these in betweeners. Like for the high 9 1929 5 cent There is a lower tail thatyou see straight awat it cannot be a hgh 9. Then the one where your head is put at funny angles and although the conclusion is ,it still doesn't look high enough to be a high 9. And of course the true high 9 that you can see its tail tip almost in line with the bas of 2. I have seen the middle version slabbed as high 9 also. I think this could be a cause for concern. Especially with the vast difference in prices. I'll enclose avery very rough pic and description. Although not set in stone as pics can lie. distance between digits don't. I would like to hear your thoughts. Also what can be done. Seems NGC dropped the ball on this one.

you need to get familiar with well over 400 different 1859 1 cent coins. You will be really confused after you have seen them all . AND you have to take as gospel the answers you receive from a few experts. even though they might be right most the time, the may not always be right with their explanations. There are a few sites you can get educated on large cents.
Viper listed one and here is another. It is our member ZONAD'S site: http://www.ashrap.com/
and I am sure SPP-Ottawa can give you a few others.

Thanks 47P7 google seems to only favour 1/2 a dozen sites. pretty useless in fact. This will be most helpful. Oh Is there any recording of an 1884 Brass cent variety. I have one looks exactly the same as the 1859 pictured on Coinsandcanada but its an 1884. I can't even give you a decent picture. I have no luck snapshotting. coins. I cn take clear photo's but to actually capture the coin as it looks. Well that is still beyond my grasp. lol

47P7 is right on concerning the number of 1859 varieties and marriage pairs. Both your coins are narrow 9's. Since the last digit was handpunched into each of the working dies to make the 10 million (actually less) each placement of the 9 was different with each die, meaning the angle, spacing and whether it was exactly perpendicular to the die. The reverse dies wore out or broke 4-5 sooner than the Obverse dies, so there was much punching of the 185's as well, especially the 5's. The "wide 9" that you refer to is really an 1859/8 working die and there were 13 different of them and they all look different.

Also look in the variety section in the back for 80 pages of Victoria varieties, including some 1859's.
