The ANA started certifying coins around 1972 with picture certificates and began slabbing in Feb 1989 until they sold ANACS to Amos Press ( Coin World) in June 1990.
I wanna say the ANA started the photo grading certificates back in the late 70's/early 80's and went to the slabbing plastic in the mid 80's. They then sold out to Amos Press ( Coin World) in the late 80's or early 90's. Somebody else owns them now.
I may be off on the dates but that's how the packaging and ownership evolution went.
