So yesterday I walked into my LCS and said I wanted to buy a nice Vic. 50 cent piece for myself for x-mas..
He showed me two...
The first was a VF LCW.. nice toning ... fair amount of wear but in my opinion nice eye appeal.
The no LCW was graded F... it was under graded in my opinion but it had been severely cleaned...
So this creates two questions in my opinion....
1) Which coin would take? (which coin do you think I picked up?)
2) This was graded by ICCS .. is this common practice to undergrade a coin to account for the cleaning .. yet not make a "details" grade....
-I personally was aghast when I saw that this coin didn't have a details grade for cleaning. Seems like this practice of downgrading but not taking into account details is a slippery slope of ethics.

I would have gone with the LCW as I can't really afford the expensive ones right now :-) It is not uncommon for ICCS not to comment cleaned coins so best to keep an eye out on the older ones like this.

A problem coin is a problem coin.Period.If you purchased one,I hope it was the VF example. How ICCS net grades I do not know.I do remember a discussion here about a 1946 Dollar that ICCS graded MS64 harshly cleaned. That still boggles my mind Everest

The no problems VF LCW is the one I would get, even thought the NO LCW is scarcer. A problem coin is always a problem.............especially when selling it!

ok , you are all right.. BUT.. Quote: when are you going to fill the empty NLCW hole, and at WHAT COST?
it is the same with my 1889 dime..., IMO. get it when you can at whatever grade! You always have the option to get a better one.!

I ended up going for the VF LCW coin... it was attractive and affordable... To go to EF is a bit of a jump and more than what I would like to pay right before christmas and with 2 birthdays in less than 30 days as well....
Pics soon to follow..
but right now .. I'm going to settle in with some hot chocolate and do some reading....
Wishing you all the best for the holidays and in the New years.....

I agree with the poster who said that a problem coin is a problem coin. Very wise of you to buy a problem-free example of the type. If you are interested in a No LCW there was one on ebay as of a few days ago in an ICCS holder that looked pretty decent for the grade (G-6).

then, we can all agree to disagree on this one. there are a heck of a lot more LCW around than NLCW... that there happens to be one on the bay means nothing. Question is: will it be there when you want to buy and IF, at what price? u can always buy a rare, but damaged goods if the price is right and sell it again later when you are ready to, or the opportunity presents itself to upgrade. Personally I believe that this sort of positively counters your opinion of buying the LCW. But, to each its own....

Pacific: I have a two yr old just about to turn 3... who really had their 1st Christmas experience (last year he was a little to young to take it all in... although it also took him 3 days to unwrap his gifts... )
Seeing the magic of Christmas is just amazing!.. Today I took my boy out to an outdoor ice rink and for the first time in his life he was skating. And in the evening I was with my wife's side of her family and we were all singing carols.
I really am 1000 times blessed.
47P7: Do I ever love the fact that you're on here... frequently you see the other side of the coin and have the cahonas to voice your opinion on it! I love it! With the case of the dime where there is the hole in it... it is obvious the flaws and one can grade and value as they see fit. In the case with this particular NLCW it was actually a VF coin... but slabbed as an F coin with no mention of the cleaning. My problem isn't that it's a problem coin.. but that it's a graded coin without the problems noted...

AG, I am not a religious person. But, I do sometimes envy you and others of your family experiences. You are very lucky. I do not have any children, at least none that I know of. For me X-mas is a "blown out of proportion" Commercial event. I can give someone a gift anytime I feel like it, and usually at lower cost. However, I do enjoy getting together with friends. I had my GF of 10 years, her son and his wife at my home (they are still here). All I have to do is "put the food on the table". Every year it usually is a considerable culinary event. ( last night it was a Seafood stew with Crab, lobster, mussels, cod etc, etc,) It is fun to do and I enjoy it. About seeing the other side "of the coin". yes, u are probably right. I do usually not subscribe to the every day stuff. However, I have to think about that for the future and I am considering posting something with another topic in a few days. although, not sure yet.

AgCoinAU and 47P7. You both have your POV and I respect those. In my case singing in my church choir's Christmas Eve service is the high point of my Christmas experience. I am a Christian and also a professional-quality singer in a professional-quality choir. This year we did Ralph Vaughan Williams' The First Nowell. Such a blessing! But besides me and my wife, we have no other family close by. So it was just me, her, and prime rib for Christmas, and that was more than OK. Tomorrow we are making seafood gumbo! Lots of okra (sorry folks, if it doesn't have okra, it ain't gumbo), oysters, flounder, jumbo shrimp, and lump crabmeat with a nice, thick, creamy roux and fire-roasted tomatoes! Yum! Wishing you all a Happy New Year. Best Regards, George

Just to give a little more concrete reality to this thread ... PCGS calls this AU55. I call it MS62 at least.

Thank you! It's at the BACK of the safe deposit box. Seems like so many of these even in AU grades have sort of drab, dull, gray luster that I had to snatch this one up when I saw on ebay a couple of years ago. Best Regards, George
