Hi folks, I just joined PCGS a few months ago and submitted eight coins using the voucher I got for signing up. As this was the first time doing anything like this I didnt send any cool VAMs or my better Morgans. Here are the dates and grades as follows:

1879 O-AU53
1881 S-MS63 Heavy patina from Grandfathers collection.
1881 S-Unc Cleaned
1882 -MS62
1897 -AU55
1897 -AU55
1897 S-AU58
1903 -AU58

I can post pictures if anyone is curious. I am pretty content with these grades but I was wondering if they take into consideration that the New Orleans specimens tend to be lightly struck or the later dates such as the 1903. Finally, does anyone have any tips on submitting coins? For example how many to send in at once, or whether or not its wise to send in all high end coins or mix it up?

I like this thread better here, leej - your questions are more TPG than Morgan.

You can assume that PCGS has established a clear policy regarding New Orleans strikes as they affect the entire mintage; below MS66 it shouldn't matter in all but the worst cases.

Once your coins are in, the grader just sees a stream of coins. He has no idea where they came from or if they're part of the same order. As regards quantity and breakdown, it therefore shouldn't matter unless you're a whale dealer.

Thank you for your response SsuperDdave. That answers my questions. I just keep reading here that they grade better coins harder. I will probably submit two at a time for the budget.

They probably do know they are from the same order as I seriously doubt they mix coins from different orders. Too much chance of mixing coins up from different orders and sending them out to the wrong people. It just makes more sense to keep orders separate. They don't know what order a given box comes from, and sequential boxes may come from the same or different orders, but all coins in a given box are from the same order.

For PCGS, I try to submit at least 8 to take advantage of the savings offered by the voucher and any economies of scale with postage when making multiple submissions. Since slabbing is kind of expensive, usually only the more valuable coins get submitted. There are other valid reasons to submit that are not completely related to the monetary value like authentication or protection.
