Someone posted this coin...

Extremely-Detailed---Complex-Coins?

In this thread...

and got me interested in these extremely high detail coins. I suppose I've had a subconscious interest in them for a long time, but I'm having a hard time finding good examples.

Another could be the Aztec 1 kilo silver coin, but I'm not as fond of it as I am the above Bianchi Vatican medal.

Extremely-Detailed---Complex-Coins?

Can you recommend any coins or medals with extremely high levels of detail like this?

Thanks.

Have you ever dabbled in ancient coins? Many Greek ones are extremely detailed, here one example:

I have dabbled in ancients Medieval. I just worry that I wouldn't be able to afford any sort of decent example of an ancient coin with that sort of detail.

Didn't that coin you posted go on sale at $2 million btw? Lol.

Several of the higher-denomination coins of the British Empire (especially in the 19th century) that incorporate the royal coat of arms usually feature rather intricate engraving, although perhaps not quite to the level shown in your examples in the first post.

These 1887 Half-Crowns are easily obtainable even in high grade.

Well, that first one is a medal, not a coin. I'd like to see a picture of the edges to see if it's cast. There's a super high relief/cameo plus the details on the back are outstanding. Hard to do on a coin. Makes me wonder if it's CNC or cast but I see no machine marks. :I

The Calendar Kilo comes out sweetly because silver is soft like butter.

Those Greeks must've had some strong hammer-ers...

If I am correct many ancients were struck using planchets that weren't completely cooled which allowed for detail like this, correct?

Yes, *medal I meant. The medal is 82mm.

I think that medal may be close to or at the top of the detail range for any coins or medals.

The ATB 5 oz Mount Rushmore edition kind of has a high detail look that I like.

I think it's not just the amount of detail, but also that the way these coins are made, when you look at them, it sort of feels like you're looking through a tiny window at something very awe inspiring.

There are plenty smaller ancient coins with a lot of detail which are well below the $1000 mark, mainly Greek but some of the Roman Republican Denari as well.

The same sculptor that did the medal in your example (Scott) also done this coin, available for $295. A finer example has sold for as high as $1100
