This is a highly sought after variety. Charlton's identifies this as
NS-18. This is struck on coinage or medal die axis. (NS-18A medal;
NS-18B coinage). According to Charlton's, these were "struck over the
existing tokens of Samuel Guppy of Bristol." I do not recall seeing any
that were not struck over. Concerning some other tokens, Charlton often
mentions 'sometime struck over existing tokens' or something to that
aspect. But concerning NS-18, Charlton does not use the qualifier 'sometimes.'
And then again, Charlton does not use the absolute "all." I can not confirm
whether or not that normal NS-18's exist (not over stuck). I would grade this
as F-12. Dependent upon the condition of the host token, the degree of the
overstrike varies. Also, tokens such as the one in the photo pose another
thoughtful problem. The token appears to have environmental damage to the word
NAVAGITION. Was this 'damage' initially on the host token itself. If so, the
damage should not be taken into consideration when grading the token as the
is 'as struck' and the damage was not caused post strike. If the damage occurred
post strike, the condition should be reflected in the grading. In any case, this
is still a hundred dollar token.
