The 1840 is a bit cheaper, but personally I think it has a slightly nicer color/patina.

both decent looking coins. 1840 looks F grade 1842 looks VF

Looks like your selection process is improving I have a hard time grading these, but I'll throw a F15, and F20 at them. They are both nice coins.

Thanks Ed. The improvement is coming from finding trustworthy and knowledgable sellers who are very upfront about what they are selling.

The obverse of that 1840 according to the seller is "very lightly cleaned". He has lots of coins listed as "cleaned" "lightly cleaned" "very lightly cleaned" "couple of rim dings" etc...

I actually wound up passing on both of those coins, and went for this one.

this one looks VF as well 20 or 25ish

I've been looking for a higher grade 41 so the coin you went with is a good choice. Early 40s seem to be scarce in higher grades. They are either garbage or gorgeous take your pick.

I keep having trouble with the pixels in those images... definitely look VF+ but pics are oddly pixellated
