I want your opinion about the identification of a non signed medal .I think it is a work of the Belgian artist De Hondt from Bruges (1786-1862). It is an impression in pewter from 41 mm.

obv : Royal school for useful and plastic arts -- 's Hertogenbosch
Here are my reasons to identify De Hondt as the creator .
1:origin of the collection .
My wife got this collection by inheritance. The first owner had to be very close to De Hondt because the big number of medals he had from this artist, many in two or three copies. For the 19-century there are only medals of De Hondt . I think that these facts point to a personnal contact.
2:the topic.
De Hondt was yet making a medal for this school in 's Hertogenbosch , see the pewter impression ( 50 mm , representing a wild man )

Identification-Of-A-Medal
In the two medals there is an orange tree , a symbol only used by Belgian artists for the Dutch royalty from 1815 to 1830 ( Belgian Revolution ).
The combination Minerva with the arm on a shield is also only used by Belgian artists , they told me in 's Hertogenbosch. So I assume this medal has been made by a Belgian.
The dutch medallist David van der Kellen Jr ( 1804-1876 ) made also medals for this school ,he too used a Minerva as symbol , but his style is all different .
From 1826 on , D.Dubois ,born in Bruges , was director of the school . He ordered a medal by the Belgian medallist C.J.Praet , who passed the order to De Hondt .
3: Style .
The style is the same as in the medal he made in 1821 for the Royal society of national linguistics and literature in Bruges (Penningkabinet Brussels inv nr II 27630).
This medal (41 mm) represents also Minerva , sitting in the same way , the dress falling in the same way , but more worked out .
Many letter are formed in the same way .

4: Conclusion .

For all these reasons , I think De Hondt made this medal.
It is difficult to know if he made it on the same moment as the wildman medal . It is a non finished work : see letters (K) , 's Hertogenbosch written in an inregular way . Because making a die is a lot of work , I think the order of this medal has been canceled because of the changing political situation .If so , we have to date the medal in 1830 .

I tried to upload the medal in the Brussels Kabinet here , but it doen t work .You can see it on http://www.kbr.be , choise: Nederlands, then collecties, then at left :munten en penningen, then online collecties, then : in verzameling zoeken, then :at left :1° nummer (1): K 272/8 , 2° objectsoort (3) : penning , 3° inventarisnummer (second to last) : II 27630 .

Wish I could help, but I have no information on this medal. It's a beautiful piece though.
