Ave ! A friend of mine was thinking of buying this coin http://www.ebay.com/itm/249-251-A-D...em3f438117f9I told him not to go for it due to the seller (who I have heard is not very good) and because it looks like a modern reproduction. Was I right ? As always thanks.

I am relieved that I was right but flabbergasted that this coin has 45 bids and is being sold to people.

With 45 bids to have reached the current level, it was posted as a bargain - tricking people into bidding. No proper attribution for a coin of that value should always raise a red flag. Hope someone notifies ebay - I personally are not registered there.

Don't be confused by the 45 bids. There are only 16 different bidders (at this stage), and there is no count on how many of those are 'shill' bidders who bid the price up for the seller. In no part of the carefully worded listing does the seller claim that the coin is 'Authentic' or 'Genuine'. This allows him to sell 'Replicas'. Undoubtedly Saxby's do sell some genuine coins (I have bought notes from him) but he does have a history of selling some coins that are described as 'fakes' so I wouldn't take the risk at the high end, even with the protection of 'Paypal' and ' ebay' because of all of the 'jumping through hoops' that you have to do to get the refund (that doesn't cover all of your costs). Been there!

Even if there were a chance it is real, buying from questionable sources is only going to make you question your collection later, so whether or not that specific coin is real you still gave your friend good advice.

The seller says it all Saxby. ebay needs to wise up and pull this seller, it's not helping there reputation by letting him stay.

Thanks C1530 , he said he would take me out to diner for saving him over $1000. And I agree Echizento , this is ruining our hobby. This is the exact reason I only buy from local dealers and from Vcoins.

I sent in a fake report to ebay, sadly they probably wouldn't do anything about it.

The seller is a charlatan. Enough said ..... As I found out myself this month to the tune of $298 ebay does not give a rats #&& about crooks. They will gladly let someone sell the same item twice and keep my money ! You bought a coin last night from one of the best dealers in the world. If you ask Antonio to find you a coin like this I am sure he will be very helpful. He does actually answer his 'mail' and is a very sociable person. unlike some of the slimy weasels ! This past year I purchased a coin after an almost two year absence and he messaged me asking why I had not been bidding ! I answered honestly that he had been getting some very impressive prices and that being a 'bargain hound' I had been looking elsewhere. After your Claudius find I will have to be more diligent about watching his sales.

If I were to bid on this piece, I would want it to be XRF'ed to verify it, looking for trace metals, not gold. The ancients knew nothing of electrolytic gold refining. Why on Earth would a seller put up such a highly potentially valuable genuine coin, without a provable provenance? Without such information, this piece HAS to be considered to be suspicious.

I think FVRIVS RVFVS summed up the seller very well. And yes this sale reeks of suspicion, but hey my friend didn't lose $1000 and I get a free lunch tomorrow so I can't complain.

it ended at £2650, that's over $4,000. Disgraceful.
