The 1889-cc Morgan dollar in this ebay listing is in a fake PCGS holder:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1889-cc-mor...em2a4925cbec

The real 1889-cc sold on Heritage for $44,602:
http://coins.ha.com/itm/morgan-doll...Lot=1x=0&y=0

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the fake vs real:

It is easy to see they are not the same coin. The fake PCGS holder is a scary good counterfeit.

Holy cow. Good catch.

If fakes are getting this good and can be turned out in quantity, then TPGs are in serious, serious trouble.

Wow, I just took a look at the other photos this seller has of Morgans... If these are all counterfeit, these are some terrifying examples... The 1879 with the light toning is the scariest...

I looked-up some of his other pictured PCGS holdered Morgans.....they are legit.
All these fakes can be easily stopped if PCGS would just do the same as NGC and take pictures of the coins after they certify them. Apparently, PCGS is a penny pinching grading company looking to cut costs for the short-term instead of looking to the future.

g048406.

I have never been a full fan of slabs, or the high cost of slabbing, nor the exponential pricing of the higher MS grades. Like a MS64 might be worth $100 and a MS65 is worth $1,500. Wealth "diminish-creation" -- "theory-convention-tradition" be darned.

And all the while, the TPGers, are the (mostly and only) true money winners. You will see many slabbed coins on ebay, selling for half the cost of the slab.

IMHO if the cost of a TPGer was in the $10 range, slabbing would increase 10 fold.

Now that counterfeiting of COINS & SLABS is all so well done, I sincerely think TPGers, days are in question, as least at the currant cost rate of slabbing.

The really sad part is the fake China coins are fairly good. Now all they had to do was counterfeit the SLAB. That servers two purposes. The SLAB raises the value of the coin inside. And it HIDES the coin inside, making it harder to SEE IT, or weigh it, etc., etc.

TPGers --- too bad, so sad, your dad, Mr. china forger.

Agreed. A counterfeiter will-can steal everything to get the big bucks.

When I looked-up the coin this seller has pictured for his 1893 Morgan dollar PCGS #20265714 it matched the coin from Heritage:
http://coins.ha.com/itm/morgan-doll...Lot=1x=0&y=0

I strongly doubt he actually has this coin. He probably just stole Heritages pic.......nobody is going to sell a $920 coin for $150.

This is not good news for the high end coin market.

Nothing we haven't seen - even in this quality - before. That's what we're here for (among other things), to catch and act on this stuff. Which is why I message the seller every time with these: it prevents them from claiming ignorance, and the law requires deliberacy.

I really don't mean to be unsympathetic to the plight of the sucker, but anyone who thinks that they are getting a $40,000 coin for $150 dollars, genuinely deserves to lose that $150.

If somebody walks into the MB dealer and the dealer says here is CLS for $85,000. Or I have this one over here, which is the exact same car for $15,000. Does anyone really just hand over the $15,000 and drive away with the car without asking "what's wrong with it ? Why is it so much less?" Really, is it just coin people ?

It's just that people sometimes "discover" coins too long before they discover coin knowledge. Looking at it from the outside, the amount and varying degrees of fraud present in what's supposed to be a "respectable" hobby is rather astounding.

I agree that PCGS should photograph every coin they certify. That just makes sense to me. Another reason why I prefer coins in NGC holders.

I've been studying the counterfeit coin, and boy, it looks really good. Scary, indeed. Aren't these available on alibaba? Gonna check.
